Blackface Deluxe Reverb KitClinchriver May 29th, 2012, 07:30 AM Anyone here offer one of these? One of my buddys was a electronics tech in the airforce, were thinking about two Deluxe reverbs. andyfromdenver May 29th, 2012, 08:04 AM On ebay right now there's a Deluxe reverb kit from Bangkok. Chassis, turret board, faceplates. You'll have to source the rest. Have you checked Mojotone or Weber? Clinchriver May 29th, 2012, 09:07 AM Thanks I'll check it out. I primarily build acoustic guitars, so DIY amps is new territory. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Bill Moore May 29th, 2012, 11:02 AM I am currently working on a Weber DR kit. Am using most of the supplied components, but was disappointed that chassis holes were not in standard locations. Had to drill more for OT, cap board and cover, bias pot, and circuit board mounting. andyfromdenver May 29th, 2012, 11:15 AM Thanks I'll check it out. You'll definitely earn bragging rights if you pull this off for a first build :) DavidP May 29th, 2012, 12:28 PM This is a very ambitious first DIY project; I'd start off with something less complex to get a feel for soldering, lead dress, etc. I'd recommend getting the kit from a source with decent documentation and/or tech support (you'll need it, at least I did.) My first DIY was a Mission 5E3 and I certainly leaned on Bruce Collins more than a few times by email and phone to get through it. That amp is a keeper and more than holds its own against vintage 5E3s I've a-b'd against. I've done 6 more since then so its now 2nd nature. Warning DIY amps are highly addictive. Clinchriver May 29th, 2012, 12:41 PM The addiction part has me worried, I love small tube amps. I've owned a couple rivera era Super Champs and one Princeton Reverb II. I have one 100 watt boogie at the moment so........ Maybe do a couple of 5E3's before tackling a Blackface? Bill Moore May 29th, 2012, 01:32 PM You have a friend to fall back on, go for it! My first complete build was a Twin clone, and maybe I was a bit ambitious, but the Deluxe is only 1 less tube socket! telex76 May 29th, 2012, 01:41 PM On ebay right now there's a Deluxe reverb kit from Bangkok. And everyone knows you just can't beat that Bangkok quality. muchxs May 29th, 2012, 01:54 PM And everyone knows you just can't beat that Bangkok quality. Their bootleg chassis is close to perfect. It's very close to a 100% replica of the real thing. Makes the pressbrake specials look like junk. I'm not gonna name names and point fingers but some of the "replica" chassis start as a flat sheet of galvanized steel sometimes called "tin". Calling 'em a replica is a stretch. A real Deluxe never had an IEC plug. I'm gettin' a little tired of "file to fit" replica chassis. Some of the DIY stuff means "finish the R&D yourself." That's kinda dumb when everything fit correctly 50 years ago. Think about that for a moment. Stuff made by hand 50 years ago fit perfectly. Stuff made on "high precision" CNC machinery today doesn't. My only beef is the Thai circuit boards use Rohs eyelets. Takes extra care to make 'em take solder. It seems all the eyelets everywhere have changed to a solder resistant plating. How hard can it be to make a brass eyelet that actually takes solder?! celeste May 29th, 2012, 04:46 PM And everyone knows you just can't beat that Bangkok quality. If it is Nik of Ceriatone, you will be hard pressed to find better quality. Others might make different tonal choices, but the quality of the parts is first rate. |
