I just changed out the pickup on my Parts-o-Cabronita.
I had a TV Jones Classic Plus. I felt that it was a bit to mid-rangey for my taste. I listened to the various clips that are on the TV Jones website, and didn't feel that the Classic was what I was looking for, and of course the higher out put choices would be going in the wrong direction. I did like the clip of the TV-HT, but since it would have cost $130, I decided to try something cheaper and still humbucking first. So I bought the standard Gretsch HS Filtertron.
I have read mixed reviews of this pickup. Some love it, others feel that the TV Jones pickups kill the Gretsch. I am not one who drinks the Kool Aid on boutique stuff, so I figured that the Gretsch might be just what the doctor ordered. It has a considerably lower resistance as compared with teh Classic Plus, so lower output might solve my problems.
I just finished installing it, and so far, it is a nice improvement. It still has a bit of a quack, but not so prevalent. instead, it is bright, articulate, and with a decent amount of agression to it when played through my Express clone.
I need to play it through my rehearsal rig to be sure (I am more familiar with it's tones), which won't happen until next week, but I think this pickup will be fine. I've already put my TV Jones up for sale.
Anyone else have similar experiences with going from TV Jones to Gretsch (instead of the other way around)?
