Torz Johnson May 27th, 2012, 10:48 PM I wanted a different flavor of dirt box a few months ago, so I tried about five OD and Distortion pedals at a nearby shop. This one just blew me away, but then so did the price tag! So since I couldn't get the ZVEX, I just passed on the dirt pedals entirely and I ended up with a very nice chorus pedal.
I kept thinking about that damn Box of Rocks and when I finally had some extra $$$ I went in today and paid the ridiculous price. It immediately rendered all of my other dirt boxes obsolete, so I guess I'll sell 'em and get back some of my money that way.
This thing really nails the cranked Marshall sound, but I also really like the lower-gain settings, just at the edge of breaking up. The full tone of the guitar gets through without that squashed, processed, buzzy sound that a lot of pedals cause. Needless to say, the Tele sounds awesome through this thing.

mal paso May 27th, 2012, 11:13 PM Man, I had one of these for about a minute, and flipped it.
Shoulda coulda woulda
Congrats on the pedal, it's always cool to find a piece of the puzzle

No, I haven't even heard of it... now I've gotta look up some info on it.

It's 2 box of rocks in one pedal. Inspired by J Mascis
Axis29 May 28th, 2012, 06:59 AM I've had the Distortron on my board for about two and a half years now. It's the BoR without the boost and with the addition of a couple of switches on top that do stuff. I love the pedal. It does give you that old cranked Marshall, Bassman sound. And, ti works with every amp I've thrown it at!
Congrats on a great pedal!
bossking7 May 28th, 2012, 07:53 AM Yeah Zvex pedals are great. I tried a box of rocks when I was looking for.a distortion. Congrats!
Whoa Tele May 28th, 2012, 07:59 AM I recently rediscoverd mine after reading Axis 29s post in another thread about the BOR copping some tweed Bassman vibe. I'm still looking at the Wampler 57 tweed but this is working fine for right now. I also like some of the lower gain tones it has to offer.

Yeah, the low-gain tones are where it's at for me. This thing is great for rhythm work.
schenkadere May 28th, 2012, 02:51 PM I tried the Distortron and really liked it...very amp-like for what that's worth, but it was a nice pedal with lots of control and a lot less pricey. I believe it's a scaled down BOR...supposed to be a cranked JTM45 flavor. I see one in my distant future...I've spent enough lately putting together my best tone to date..and luckily found every one on clearance except my Dyna Comp which isn't a whole lot anyway.
Gringo13 May 28th, 2012, 04:36 PM Have seen this pedal around, but the guys at GC have never tried to sell me on it. Curious how this would sound through a 59 Bassman. Does it do the cranked tweed Bassman tone? Seems like that's what it was made to do on low-moderate gain. Anyone ever ran it into tweed? Can it do the almost fuzzy tone that some "tweedish" pedals do?
krog May 29th, 2012, 12:07 AM I use both the BoR and Distortron...love both.

As I've stated a few times, Lance and I compared it to a Catalinbread Formula No 5 and got exactly the same tones and exactly the same levels of gain out of it.
Fuzzy? I dunno, I think of fuzzy in terms of germanium fuzz... ratty and loose. It doesn't really hit me as loose or ratty, torn speaker kinda gain, but heavy, sparkly, crunchy gain.... Wow, I sound like a Wine Taster.
I have not ever run it into a tweed voiced amp... BUT, I do run it into my brownfaced '63 Vibroverb Reissue all the time. It is my main overdrive for that amp. And it takes my Keeley Fuzz head well when they are stacked.
BluesHound May 29th, 2012, 07:01 AM Damn, damn, damn................ GASsing for one of these now and I've got 25+ O/Ds / distortions / fuzz boxes..............
edipo May 29th, 2012, 07:04 AM I use the distortron and it is great. Very responsive. I bought the DLS at the same time and find the zvex much better at lower gain. I use a super duper before and get all the dirt i need. (my rat is pushing it's way back into the board though, as they always do)
