Really El Hefe? .... I was just admiring your new P'Bass and was actually thinking what a neat PG it has. I like it.

Why not replace the whole PG if you are serious, as who knows? ..... one day you may want to switch it back.

In any case, I'm sure a new PG would look much better than a 'refurbished' one any day, and they don't cost the earth.

Your new guitar deserves it anyway.

Both are squires. The black one has a higher action and strings that are 5+ years old, and played with dirty hands. It sounds greasy.
The white one has a brighter and cleaner tone, but with a string mute (sponge :)) and rolling back the tone and varitone it gets motown.

First off i want to apoligize for jumping into this Pbass thread without showing one. My excuse is that I am dyslexic. & hyperactive & on medication for a heart condition. At first glance I read show your basses ( like the common threads on another bass forum i visit.

But to make it short I am now nearing completiion of a Pabass refinish. I am starting to like it a lot now that the grain & colors have come together. I`ll show it in a few more days.
Just wanted to say there are a lot of good looking basses here in this thread.

Here's my one and only. Traded up from a bronco, to a Squier Jaguar Vintage Modified, then to this. No regrets. She weighs a ton and has some neck-dive, but the way she plays and feels is worth the weight.
The color appears to be some sort of "cola candy" sunburst. The dark brown has sparkles in it, that you can only see up close. Anyone know about this type of paint job?

The first electric guitar I owned was a Memphis P-Bass just like that one. As I remember it had plastic tuners :roll:

First one is a '92 MIJ and the second is home-made parts (still got the sticker on the scratch plate).

Actually, its a fake.

Made in Japan in the mid-eighties.
Same factory as Ibanez, Epiphone, Squire and, lord knows who else.

Plays great, stays in tune, got it used with a Hard Shell case for less than $150 in the early 90's.
Brass nut, brass bridge, very nice tuners, kind of a fat neck, weighs a Metric Ton, but I can play it all night.

These have a reputation for sure, I posted about it earlier as this one seems the exception. The hardware and neck are nice with good fret work and other than the shoddy sanding on the belly cut, though multi-piece the body is solid with a good match. Tuners are open gear Fender like and work well, NO they're not plastic and though a tad stiff I like them. Many of the Memphis were junk at best IMHO, though there are some keepers as this one will be after pups and pots.

Finished this over the weekend, mim bod and Matt Freeman Ebay neck with Fender tuners. Installed CTS, Orange etc though a coil tap, took several tries on the scroll saw for the MM pup ring, turned out OK now that I'm getting the hang of it. Killer player now, I'm happy with this one.

Mine fell into the junk camp. The tuning keys were plastic and the "E" key broke after about 2 months. After about a year the neck did it's impression of a banana. Could I fix it? Who knows, I was young and foolish. For the life of me I can't remember what happened to that bass. I ended up playing guitar after that experience.

Things are coming around full circle, I've got some cash and a very heavy Tele I'm thinking about moving. I feel the need for another P-Bass.

Really nice looking fretless, need one of those, your bound J is identical to my '73. Have had some success with Squier necks, been meaning to try one those '50s things.

This is my fretless. 1971 fretless P neck on a Warmouth body with DiMarzio pickup.

Glen this is the back during the process. I used sandpaper & steel wool to get the blend complete after this photo. I admit its not like what you would get in a spray booth with tinted lacquers but it was what i had to do under the circumstances, I used this photo because it most nearly shows the color ( which I liked a lot). I got it by using yellow food color in nail polish remover then warmed it up by top coating with Watco Danish Oil Light Walnut & finally Tru-Oil. First the plain yellow ( looks like lemon):

I almost got a squier CV 60's pbass, but got my VM for cheaper so I went with that.

binkydognose (how`d you ever think that user name up)? I also like your Telecaster. Very nice. Seems like the straps should be the other way around meaning the big wide one (looks like a Levi ) on the bass & the other on the telecaster. I put a strap like that (pictured above) on a Pbass and you talk about comfortable. Makes it seem lighter than it is actually. Either way nice instruments there. Thanks for sharing. Take care. Bob

Thanks Bob, The tele gets the most play so gets the wide strap, a real comfy leather Franklin. The Fender vintage style strap works great on the PBass for me, I can wear the bass lower than a tele. The bass is maybe 1/2 lb. heavier but doesn't feel like it to me.

Technically not mine, but a buddy's. Last week I reunited the neck and body after over 30 years apart (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/301373-whats-your-workbench-today-17.html#post4284669). Other than those 2 parts, only the tone capacitor remain from the original, but the tuners and that Dimzarzio from the late 70s still work. It sounds great. Sadly, it will be returning back to its home at the end of the week.

This is a SAGA P-Bass kit that I put together 6 or 7 years ago and finished in a super large silver flake.

Opened this one up over the weekend for a tone pot. While at it I popped the guard off and took some 600 and wool to the scratched plastic, like how the guard turned greyish. This has been a fun player since the MM pup.

Well, I threatened to do it a few months ago. I found the tortoiseshell guard in the bargain bin at my local shop, $10, couldn't help myself. Glad I did, I think it looks brilliant! Again, it's my 2011 Fender MIM Precision Bass, my first & only bass, before & after.

This is/was a $25. Craigslist bass. I sold the original "Memphis" neck that was about maxed out on the truss rod for $25. here on TDPRI and replaced it with an All Parts. Tuning gears, knobs, pots and pickguard are all new, the pickups and the body are about all that remain original. She's a rocker and as nice as any Mexican Fender I have owned.

Here's my '61 (bought in a very sorry state, with routings for a Musicman humbucker, countersunk BAII Bridge, STB-holes,... It looks like defecation from closeby (it's just white nitro over bare wood, no fullerplast or filler used), and is as original as a 27th hand car, but it sounds AMAZING. All thanks to the neck, which is something weird. It isn't as wide as the sixties necks are (1.7" instead of the 1.75" at the nuth), but it's THICK, a very thick, chunky C-shape, almost an U, 0.95" from fretboard to back).

I'm kinda neurotic in terms of details and stuff, but I'm NO match for what Gil Yaron aka Preeb does in terms of details, woodworking,...

This one isn't mine. It belongs to the guitarist who doubles on bass in a band from Denver called "Forests of Azure." I saw them last night and just loved the look of the bass. He let me take a couple of pictures after the show.

I like the look of maple, I like the feel of rosewood. I can play either just fine.

Not a fan of maple necks in general at all, but the two Ps I've owned in my life were both maple necked. They just had that sound.
