Stacking drive pedals with amp's gain [Archive]

I just watched this video where Joe Satriani goes through his live rig. He's using a modded, 4-channel Marshall plus Vox Satchurator and Ice 9 pedals (among other stuff).

Since the Marshall can give so much gain and has 4 selectable channels, I wonder why is he using the Satchurator and Ice pedals.

Moreover, when I try to 'stack' overdrive and/or distortion pedals with a high gain amp, I end up with a sound worse that that of the amp's (clipping?).

Any thoughts?
