Based (ahem) on the 51 P-bass, I used a chambered mahogany body with a poplar top, GFS paddle-head neck.

Quite the monster, especially compared to my Jazz Bass Deluxe 24. The chambering makes it almost too bright. I have round wounds on it now which are settling in and mellowing, but I'd like to try it with flat wounds or even tape wounds. Played up near the neck it is developing a nice reggae thump. With tapes it might give me a rockabilly stand-up tone.

Anyway...

Yeah, I forgot to peel off the plastic on the pickguard for this photo!

Very nice.

I would be surprised if the chambering is what makes it bright. Single coil Precision pickups are usually noticeably brighter than Jazz pickups.

Nice build.

Definitely throw some flats on that bass; it'll take a lot of the treble off and give you that classic sound. I've been pondering an old-school P-Bass with flats; I have a mild James Jamerson fixation.

Mild? I've got a major one. One of the first things I did when I got my Line 6 110 Lowdown was turn on the "R&B" setting and dial it in to a JJ sound with my Jazz bass. Love "The Hook".

Then you REALLY need flats on that bass!
