icy_wind500 May 20th, 2012, 09:22 PM I currently have a ceriatone champ ultra and a peavey classic 20
After reading all the posts here, I'm seriously GASing to do my own amp.
I'm pretty much set on getting the kit from triode. And get a cab done by my local furniture builder.
So I just need to decide between the 5E3 kit or the 5F1 kit.
Will the 5E3 kit be too difficult to start with?
But will the 5F1 sound the same as my ceriatone ?
Oh I just dont know what to pick....
printer2 May 20th, 2012, 09:43 PM 5E3, you already have a Champ. A 5E3 is not much harder to build than a single ended amp. If you can build one you can build one and screw up the other just as well. Might as well go for it. Besides, if you do screw up there are a lot of friendly knowledgeable people here that can help you out.
How is that for encouragement?
javabirds May 20th, 2012, 10:57 PM 5f1 to 5e3 is a more logical progression if you really want to build a few and learn them inside and out. Both are simple circuits and related. If you just want another amp, buy a kit already built or build the 5e3.
keithb7 May 20th, 2012, 10:59 PM My vote is 5E3. It was the first amp I ever built. If you take your time and double or triple check all your work, you should be fine. I had a slight hiccup when I first built mine, others here helped me. I had to learn to trouble shoot and repair later on, as I chased some crackling. I learned about good grounds and how nuts can rattle loose. Later I developed a squeal, from a wire too close to another component. Again, from the research I did on here, I found the confidence to try, and did indeed do my own repairs. I have learned a lot and my 5E3 is over a year old now and sounds great. Go for it.
Mightyaxeman May 20th, 2012, 11:35 PM You could try a 5f1 with a larger cabinet and speaker. Weber offers a cab for a 10 inch speaker. I use mine at home to get great tone at a slightly lower volume. The 5f1 is a great build for anyone.
Ricky D. May 21st, 2012, 02:19 AM Time to take off the training wheels for a few minutes. You'll be OK. Build the 5E3. It's one of the greatest amps of all time, still in professional use more for more than 50 years.
icy_wind500 May 21st, 2012, 08:19 AM I have decided to go with the 5E3 and ordered a kit 5 min ago !! Yea !
now I need to think about speakers, is the original tweed deluxe come with a 10" speaker?
I can find a Jensen C10R nearby, are they any good?

They came with 12" speaker.
The only thing really harder about building a 5E3 instead of a 5F1 is that there are more components. More chances of messing up, more to troubleshoot when it doesn't work.
aunchaki May 21st, 2012, 09:46 AM As you already have a Champ, I'd say build the Deluxe. If you want to split the difference, look into a Tweed Princeton. Whatever you choose, have fun and take pics!

Some like the LEGEND 1058 for a 10". Then there are the 12" speakers. I did a search with guitar speakers and Australia and there seems to be a good variety to choose from. Do some listening on youtube, do a search for 5E3 and the speakers available to you at a reasonable cost.
Revv23 May 21st, 2012, 10:08 AM My vote is for a weber 12A125A. Have it in mine its perfect.
keithb7 May 21st, 2012, 10:15 AM As someone mentioned already, traditionally the 5E3 deluxe came with a 12" speaker. I built mine with a 12". It sounds great, however I mostly use mine at home and I find a good alnico 10" speaker works better for me. Less volume. The 5E3 is a loud amp for home use and the volume is pretty jumpy and hard to control at reasonable levels at home. It depends on your main use. Nothing wrong with the 12", sounds great with a drummer, and when you need a little more volume.
Are you building a head or combo unit? Did your amp kit come with a cabinet? If so, there is a good chance the baffle is already cut for a 12" speaker.
icy_wind500 May 21st, 2012, 10:17 AM I really want to stay with 10" because I have a weber 12A150 in a night train cab that I use for my champ ultra. So If I ever need the 12" I could just plug into the external cab. The kit doesnt come with a cabinet but it is an combo configuaration.
The Eminence speakers are alittle expensive here....I could get my hands on some Jensen 10" for $70-80 so if they are ok, I might go with them.
Still have to put money forward for the tweed cab.
Gees...suddenly half the digits on my bank account is gone....
Painful for a working part time uni student.....
Revv23 May 21st, 2012, 12:30 PM The jensen 10 you mentioned should be fine.
Telenut62 May 21st, 2012, 05:50 PM Try WGS G10C or the G10C/S....heaps better than a Jensen IMO.
icy_wind500 May 22nd, 2012, 09:13 AM I've found a very nice builder who is building me a combo cab!
I also picked up a weber 10A125 at a great price !
So looking forward to this build !
Revv23 May 23rd, 2012, 09:10 AM Pics or it didnt happen!!

Revv23 May 24th, 2012, 02:15 PM anyone out there w/ a 5E3 in a 2x10?
Im sure there is. Ive seen plenty of "double 5e3's as well. Basically a 30w in a 2x12. Victoria makes one iirc. If not im sure weber makes a kit.
