Jazzerstang May 18th, 2012, 08:24 PM I just mixed some up tonight ("nitrocellulose" lacquer). Has anyone ever tried this before? How did you apply it to a body? Also, how do I do grain filling with elmer's wood filler in a tube--is it even worth it? I am going for this type of look:

glen smith May 18th, 2012, 08:31 PM Pingpong ball????????????????????
Jazzerstang May 18th, 2012, 08:42 PM yeah. Take a mason jar, cut up ping pong balls into little pieces with a razor and scissors, mix with nail polish remover (acetone)- 2 tablespoons per ball-- fill it in the mason jar-- shshshshake it up!. The balls dissolve and the concoction turns into a sticky, milky substance. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried this.
glen smith May 18th, 2012, 09:09 PM And what would this concoction be used for?

glen smith May 18th, 2012, 09:49 PM Interesting, thanks for the information.
Jupiter May 18th, 2012, 10:10 PM So what do you make the wood for the body out of?
Jazzerstang May 18th, 2012, 10:17 PM It's an ash mighty mite body. The grain is REALLY ugly (mismatch 5000), but the body is only 3 lbs, 15 oz. It's for the guitar in my avatar. The body is just really heavy and it has been giving me soreness in my upper back and shoulder.

Any way, I have no spray gun. Would it be possible to just apply the nitro by foam brush?
TeleTim911 May 18th, 2012, 10:19 PM Ever looked at Preval sprayers?

Hilarious!!!
adjason May 18th, 2012, 10:30 PM Sounds interesting if nothing else. That color you want can be gotten real close to with reranch fender blonde opaque. That is real close to what it looks like. The reranch just might be a tad lighter (whiter)in color.

Yeah, I've used one of those once. What a piece of crap.
fasteddie455 May 19th, 2012, 08:52 AM so if I wanted a coat or two of CLEAR nitrocellulose lacquer on my guitar then do i gotta find clear pingpong balls?
Why go through all this trouble to make nitrocellulose and then have to acquire a gun or worse apply it with a brush, when there are SUPERB products available in an aerosol can. No mixing, no reducing, no guns , no compressors,no hoses, no BRUSHES, comes in already mixed GUITAR colors, comes in CLEAR, and while it is not cheap, it is definately not cost-prohibitive.
Easy, easy, easy. What more could you ask for?
Jazzerstang May 19th, 2012, 11:11 AM If anything, it is just a fun science experiment. I tested a bit that I made on some scrap wood, and it is not the greatest. It goes on clear, but it is just a lot of work for not much outcome. I think I'm gonna stick to the ole tung oil with black bakelite guard for this project. The guitar is a player-- I don't think I want layers of lacquer. Just some thoughts.
chezdeluxe May 19th, 2012, 04:32 PM An interesting aside. AFAIK no suitable substitute for celluloid has been found for ping pong balls.
jefrs May 19th, 2012, 06:52 PM Erm silly question.
Why don't you go to your local auto body shop paint place and buy some nitrocellulose lacquer like what they use for spraying over the paint?
Works rather well out of an airbrush too with a drop of cellulose paint thinners.
