Classical guitar tuning machine installation?

Hello,

I've got a Yamaha G-55A classical guitar. One of the tuning machines needs to be replaced. The replacement "el cheapo" tuning machine bracket mounting holes are too close to the existing holes in the headstock.

Using the tuning machine that would normally install on the opposite side solves this problem as the tuning machine brackets mounting holes are now about 3/16 inch lower than the existing holes in the headstock.

Are there any drawbacks other than aesthetics to having the tuning machine installed this way? Any tuning or playability problems because of this mounting? The tuning machines knobs will be offset from the other sides tuning machine handles about 1/2 inch. Only the one damaged tuning machine will be replaced.

If the undamaged tuning machine was also replaced, the upside down mounting would not be apparent, as both ends of the tuning machine bracket are identical.

What do you think?

Thanks In Advance,
Uni

You'll also have to remember to turn the knobs in the opposite direction when tuning up if you mount the tuning machines upside down like this.
I'm not sure I completely understand what you're describing, but it sounds to me like it would be better to just plug the old screw holes and then redrill. I've done this a number of times when screw mounting holes don't quite line up, but almost overlap the old screw holes.

Thanks,

If that's my only concern, I can live with that untill I find a pair of older tuning machines to replace the el cheapo.

I've got a cheap Strat copy I put left handed tuning machines on, and don't have any problems other than the knobs turning the opposite way.
