The author suggests wiring the pickup directly to the output jack and then opines that "you can fine-tune this tone by varying the length and make of your guitar cable."
Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

all these mods have been covered a million times over and I can't believe somebody actually pays him to write this crap.....

maybe, but following that line of thought most of guitar related articles would have stopped being written decades ago ...
it was a first time for me so I'm happy these things keep being published.

it's all relative and subjective. each of us that love our esquires will figure out over time what works best for either a specific situation or as a jack of all trades.
since there's only one single coil pup in the bridge (please, NO humbuckers!!! ack!!!), the more stuff you stick in the circuit and the larger the cap(s) the more treble gets sucked away. this can be a good thing for highly treble/icepick oriented pups, with around 9000 42awg coil wire turns or less and less than 7k or so resistance. none of that screech is my cup of tea, to each their own.
i like a fatter toned esquire pup with lots of turns and a5 mags, that's wired to a 3-way as - volume, volume + tone w/.022uf cap, volume + .0047uf cap. running direct to the output is just not realistic for a gigging/recording pro, let's get real ... and it really won't matter much tone-wise. an esquire with no select switch wired to a vol pot and a no-load tone pot w/.022uf is a very usable combination as that .0047uf cap "cocked wah" sound isn't a mainstay tone. no matter what, it's the engine that will decide the range of tones - and thus usage - of the wonderful esquire one pup wonder. ymmv.
my current only electric, an esquire (of course) ...

thanks for the post. Rob. very informative stuff!
even esquires have been triggering my GAS lately  and I just say "even" because I have always been a neck pu guy. ..but those esquire axes look stunning and simple - reminding me of the old "small is beautiful"

I have a pretty good collection of esquire wiring diagrams in my library, including Rob's favorite setup. :)
