Are Gilmour EMG's Worth $$$ ?

It looks like it's about $250 for a Gilmour EMG loaded pickguard. I'm just wondering if those PUPs are really worth spending big bucks on? In order to get Gilmour's tone you need a lot of effects.

Just wondering how good those PUP's are without effects?

I imagine he is using some very expensive effects (http://www.kitrae.net/music/Music_mp3_OAI_Sound.html)in that video...

I have used a set of EMG's and added the to additional circuits...It's alright, but I always wind up taking them out. Then again, I don't use a lot of effects.

IMO, I'd get the Lace Hot Golds for $150-ish...ymmv, as usual.

The article you linked says he used 3 pedals. Did I read it wrong ?

ok, maybe not expensive by themselves, but I imagine by the time Pete puts them together for him...

I've had them, and thought they were a poor match for my '94 AmStd Strat (which I really love). But in some guitars they seem to work great.

I've had several sets of EMGs in different guitars. In the end, my verdict is always the same - they work great run through compression and overdrive, but just don't cut it for me played straight.

Gilmour's sound is effects dependent, but it's not that complicated. It's generally just compression -> overdrive -> echo, with a whole lotta good taste thrown in for good measure.

Gilmour always gets pretty much the same sound, regardless of guitar. These days he is back to Fender single coils, and sounds shockingly like the guy from Pink Floyd. Who knew?

What Gilmour sound are you looking for? I don't think he was using EMGs on Dark Side (they didn't exist).

Dito. A good Strat, a good tube amp plus maybe echo, comp and phaser will get you in the ballpark, IMO.

Unless you are needing super long cable runs, where having actives is a plus, I don't see a real benefit to using the EMG pickguard. And as bradpdx said, other strat pickups sound better clean.

I bought a set from a friend a few years ago. He bought a carvin w/buckers and a piezo, and didn't want them anymore. I installed the DG set in my '99 am std ash/maple strat. I like some Pink Floyd tunes, but I wasn't purposely trying to get the DG tone. I liked them for a while. I think they are quite versatile due to the tone shaping (read E.Q.) capabilities of the tone knobs. They are quiet, maybe too quiet. I had a couple strat plus guitars, and they were also quiet. I think lace sensors and an E.Q. pedal would get you there.
If you do decide to get them, the 9v battery will fit in the trem cavity in the place of the two inner springs, provided you don't use trem. It will fit also in the "swimming pool" route on some guitars, but you must remove the strings and 'guard to change the battery. The whole system dies with the battery, so plan ahead.
For the record, I sold the DG set on the 'bay along with my strat plus guitars. My am std has a set of van zandt vintage plus that work well for that particular guitar.
Good Luck.

You are wrong.
Check this video, where Rob Turner (Founder CEO of EMG ) install them.
5:03 he shows how to change the 9v with removing only 4 screws.

I don't have experience with the DG20 set, but have a set of EMG S ceramic strat pu's installed in a guitar, and love 'em dearly. That is the set Vince Gill uses in his black strat. He also has a preinstalled pickguard set, called -shock, horror- the VG20 set. That is 3*S pus, 1 vol, 1 master tone, 1 SPC controll.

The S ceramic set gives you a tad more trebly, chimey sound over the SAs, worth considering. Here's Vince Gill using them, in the middle of the solo you can see him turning the SPC on for some fat.

I'll stand corrected.
I had mine in the trem cavity. The guy who I bought them from had them under his pickguard, but advised me against it because he had to take it all off to change the battery.

Dagnab!

DG's famous songs and solos are mostly on non EMG pups.
Anyhoot, many were recorded b4 EMG came around in the late 70'S!
