Metal Flakesudancat May 15th, 2012, 07:46 PM Wheres the best place to order some metal flake and what size. Going to be using the ole flour sifter to apply. wired to go May 15th, 2012, 08:15 PM You can get it at your local automotive paint shop. I guess the size of flake is really up to you. You could ask the guy at the counter for advise. Buckocaster51 May 15th, 2012, 09:40 PM TCP Global (http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/) is a decent place. 4 ounces should do a body with plenty to spare. 0.015" hex flake You might want to use a modified salt shaker instead of a sifter...that's what I was doing before I switched to the Flake Buster. http://www.backwaterpartymusic.com/%20buttercaster/emeraldcaster/ss8.jpg sudancat May 15th, 2012, 11:34 PM Thanks Buck, My plan is to lay down a 2 part PPG/Omni Urethane clear, apply the silver flakes and then build up with the same clear. Is this going to be sufficient or should I fill with something else and top off with the 2 part PPG clear? glen smith May 15th, 2012, 11:36 PM Ooooh, I love sparkles! Buckocaster51 May 16th, 2012, 08:35 AM Thanks Buck, My plan is to lay down a 2 part PPG/Omni Urethane clear, apply the silver flakes and then build up with the same clear. Is this going to be sufficient or should I fill with something else and top off with the 2 part PPG clear? I use a PPG color blender hold the flake in place. It gives a longer working time and isn't quite as permanent as the urethane...easier to fix up blunders...then coat with the 2 part as needed...and it always needs a lot! BSR77 May 16th, 2012, 08:49 AM I use Roth Metal Flakes .015 if your spraying i believe they call it the standard. Also use a 1.8 tip in the gun. They also have larger flake which i sprinkle on. If you check the pics in my photo album the pink guitar is HOK pink pearl base coat then the Roth Ratsberry .015 flake. I used the HOK Flake Karrier which is like an intercoat mixed with a healthly amount of flake. I laid down 4 coats of that followed by 6 coats of clear. That gives me room for error when sanding it to level. That guitar was the first time I used HOK. I typically use PPG and always get great results but I am very happy with the HOK and it laid out extremely well. Very little to sand and buff. sudancat May 16th, 2012, 04:50 PM So I need to lay down a base coat of color blender, sprinkle on metal flake then, when ready, start applying multi coats of the 2 part Omni clear which is Urethane, sanding stage process then buff. Yup. sudancat May 17th, 2012, 07:31 PM Thanks all for the advice and help Buckocaster51 May 18th, 2012, 12:10 AM Don't rush anything. Think it through. Let things dry/harden. In my experience, sparkles (aka stripper dust) is a patient man's game... Skycries57 May 19th, 2012, 12:21 AM man that could take a whole qt of nitro or poly eh? sudancat May 19th, 2012, 11:23 AM I'll try to post pics and updates once I start, if it turns out ok!!
