mefgames May 14th, 2012, 06:50 PM Does anyone know of good sources for guitar woods online ? I know of StewMac, LMI, Warmoth, etc, but their prices seem a bit high. I have found a few, but would kind of like to comparison shop. Mostly looking for Tele size tops, not the whole body.
Thanks, Mike
PlutoLex May 14th, 2012, 07:27 PM I see you're in the North Bay here. Head over to Berkeley and look at MacBeath! I occasionally buy stuff from eBay too, but it's just fun to go drool over the wood at MacBeath (and they have a nice selection of veneer that you could use for tops in the loft).
guitarbuilder May 14th, 2012, 07:47 PM I've been getting most of my non domestic east coast stuff off of ebay lately.... prices are a bit less for mahoganies than what I'd pay locally when you consider the price of gas and taxes.
DaveCCF May 14th, 2012, 07:53 PM I've been using these guys: http://www.gilmerwood.com
I get non-domestic woods from them. They aren't cheap, but you get to see a photo of the slab you're ordering and every piece I've received from them has been top-notch.
Shipping is kind of a killer for me, since they're half way across the country, but might be easier for you since they're a bit closer.

Great site with some beautiful wood - thank you for sharing this
Lucretia May 14th, 2012, 09:21 PM Here's one you probably haven't even thought of. When you walk about the streets, do you ever see bits of old furniture in people's yards/gardens waiting to be taken away? They obviously won't be getting rehomed as they're out in the rain and all sorts of crap weather. Ask if you can have it, take it away, take a knife to the fabric, rip it off, leaving you with some pine...split it up and make it usable as a body or 3.
Luke.
OpenG Capo4 May 14th, 2012, 11:42 PM I get a lot from E-bay. Like Guitarbuilder said, its often cheaper than local when it comes to gas and taxes, etc. Nearest lumberyard to me that carries guitar-grade hardwoods is 30-40 miles away. Its an awesome place though, they even milled a 36x10x6 slab of mesquite I bought on E-bay up for me on the house.
I buy from Woodcraft sometimes too. Especially fretboard blanks. Have several nice pieces I'm waiting to use.
BSR77 May 15th, 2012, 10:34 AM I just bought 3 sets of drop top walnut and redwood from this place the wood is great and you can actually see the boards you are getting. decent prices and fast shipping too.

I also go to local places and check thier stock every couple of weeks to see what they have gotten in new. Usually cheaper and they will resaw it for me.
davmac May 15th, 2012, 02:08 PM I like these guys. http://www.fine-woods.com/
You can find them on eBay too at http://www.ebay.com/sch/fine_woods/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1
emoney May 15th, 2012, 02:46 PM I know you said online, but another good source is to start with a cabinet maker and
have them direct you to a source. A lot of those guys have pieces laying around that are
no use to them, but perfect for guitar building. And, if nothing else, they can turn you onto
local sources for lumber as well.
RogerC May 15th, 2012, 03:19 PM I'm lucky enough to have a shutter manufacturer within 10 miles of my house, and they have wood sales every month. My local lumber yard (1/2 block from my house) also gets in hardwood lumber at a pretty good price once in a while. I've picked up some alder and poplar from them pretty cheap.
I'd definitely do as E suggested and find someone local who, even if they dont have anything for you, might be able to turn you on to a good local source.
