New music not "up to snuff", you say?

Then it is obvious that no-one here has listened to any Black Country Communion! These guys DO do it like Deep Purple, Zeppelin and the best hard rock bands of the late 60's & early 70's! Man, Joe Bonomassa is awesome! I had their first CD and my buddy loaned me the DVD "Live Over Europe"-WOW! They even do "Burn" by Deep Purple. I'm comletely blown away by this band! Anyone agree?

Any other examples of new bands that do their genre credit?

Case in point. All those bands you mentioned did it better over
30 years ago. Nothing new, nothing fresh. Rehashed classic rock does not count. Music today sucks.

Tele Bee, I don't think you have really checked this band out. Listen objectively as possible and possibly check out the DVD I mentioned and I think you may have a different opinion.
Maybe not, who knows.

I just really liked what I heard and saw. This is my opinion.

BCC members include Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham. You'd expect them to be able to rehash Purple and Zep. Being a covers band isn't bringing anything new to the table.

'One Last Soul' sounds like last legs Deep Purple. 'Black Country' is Led Zep III

That's one opinion, wrong though, as these ARE new songs, NOT Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and only have covered one song that I'm aware of, so that dosen't exactly make them a "covers band". I think it is fresh, new and kicks butt. I agree it resembles those killer bands, but in a fresh way and sounds great! Gods sake, listen to Glen Hughes voice! I think the guy can sing as good as he ever could!

I do love the contrast here! I think it's a great thing that we CAN have our opposing opinions, but nobody's getting hurt-no bloodshed!

Darn right. It would be a dull world if we all liked the same things

I don't expect everyone to like Leonard Cohen, Eric Bibb or Becker and Fagen/Steely Dan as much as I do. They're not exactly setting the world alight with new ideas either.

I remember hearing Can't Buy a Thrill for the first time back in 73. I'd never heard anything quite like it before, an almost perfect amalgam of jazz/blues/rock/pop/funk.

That was a real 'hairs on the back of the neck' moment. Dirty Work and Reelin' in the Years still do it.

Could not agree more. It was not better thirty years ago; just a lot different. There are some amazing songwriters and players out there, and they're not exactly toiling away in oblivion - people are listening to and buying their work.

Them Crooked Vultures do a great 70's-meets-modern-day sound, thanks in part to John Paul Jones.

I'm also a big Queens of the Stone Age fan, I like pretty much everything they do.

+1 on the Black Keys. Also like The Decemberists and Death Cab, off the top of my head.

I saw Joe Bonamassa in concert three days ago and I thought he was great. Aside from his guitar playing, he is a good singer. I wish the bass and drums had been louder in the mix, although that may have been related to where I was sitting in the arena.

One thing about the good old songs.
Thay came on LPs with a bunch of sucky songs you never hear anymore.
With time we won't hear most of the new songs that suck.

Wait that's not true I just heard WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLL.

I used to be that way about my golden era of music (which is usually early teens to early twenties for most people).

I came to the realization that even though the music on the radio is indeed becoming more and more intolerable, there was a lot of music I was missing out on. There's a lot of great music out there still being made, you just have to make the effort to find it. Just because there will never be another Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, the Who, the Doors or Zepplin doesn't mean that everything else will always pale in comparison. I'd go as far to say that these bands probably wouldn't even see mainstream airplay now days.

I dont think music "sucks" today, its just that you need to put effort into finding it on your own. It doesnt jump out at you like it used to. But I find that the hunt is part of the fun, and I am constantly on the prowl for fresh sounds. I tend to listen to music that lives underground anyway, but they are some great bands out there to be discovered... in any genre!

All new-ish. There's a lot of great, newer, singer/songwriter/folky stuff out there. The guitar work isn't always amazing, but the writing is very literate and witty. Check out Paul Baribeau and Kimya Dawson and Ghost Mice, too, if you're into that kinda thing. I, also, love J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr and such) and Jack White (White Stripes and such).

I'm on board with BCC, and everything I've heard from Bonamassa. I don't think BBC is trying to copy anything, it's just that style of 70'd hard rock/blues rock.

... and I've liked what I've heard of Blueberry Smoke.

I believe that many of us got spoiled with the quality of music in the 60's and 70's...that music has endured. I tend to compare current music to that old stuff and the new stuff for the most part doesn't cut it. Everyone wants to be in show business...many lack the talent but might be passable as product for the machine...

I doubt Arcade Fire will be highly regarded 20 years from now...

It must suck to be so stuck in the past that you can't appreciate bands that are currently out there making good music. (Dawes, Tedeschi/Trucks, Warren Haynes, The Waybacks, Wilco....)

While I agree that 1955-1973 or so, saw some of the best music in all genres, you can't forget that there was plenty of crappy music made then too.

This is why I never post examples in these threads. If a poster doesn't like specific new bands it just reinforces their argument, but it doesn't really address the actual subject.
