56strat May 11th, 2012, 01:54 PM Question for you Telecaster pickup experts - I have a mid-50's Telecaster bridge pickup in my 80's MIJ Custom Esquire and I absolutely love the tone. If I wanted to replace the pickups in my Telecaster with something that can approximate the mid-50's era Tele pickup, what would it be?
I know there are many great replacement pickups out there, but in terms of both tone and output level, which of the many choices of Telecaster pickups most closely resembles those mid-50's Telecaster pickups?
festerbeatty May 11th, 2012, 01:56 PM The custom shop nocaster pickups are some of the best ive heard

Fender OV's are highly regarded for their old school sound.

Fender Original Vintage - nice surprise!
StevieC May 11th, 2012, 07:01 PM I just got a set of Rumpelstiltskin white ropes that sound great. They are similar to 55 to 63 with a modern stagger on the bridge. Very nice pickups. His black ropes are 50 to 54 era. Google rumelstiltskin pickups and send an email to Aaron and he will help you out.
MatthewDickin May 11th, 2012, 08:00 PM What about Bareknuckle Blackguards? The 55 Stagger set might be right up your street, if you're looking for mid-fifties. I've just put a set of Flat 50s in, and the are really great pickups.

Jasorino May 12th, 2012, 12:55 AM Most manufacturers of new pickups will have a nice vintage tele bridge line. If you narrow them down to true mid-fifties specs, you'll find that the pickup manufacturers today are all going for the same goal for this designation. After all, Fender only made one style telecaster bridge pickup in any given era. The differences lie in the humans that made them. Joe might have wound this one to 6.6k. While he was talking to Bob on the next one he accidentally turned a few more winds of copper so this one ends up being 6.9k or whatever. Fender was going for approximations. Consistency is a problem when machines aren't involved. If you look at different modern brands and look for "mid-fiftees stock tele bridge" the similarities are uncanny. Duncan antiquities are great. The OV's are awesome too. Lollars, custom shops, you name it will all be very similar in sound if they are true vintage mid-fiftees spec pickups. You'll have a hard time going far off base with any of them if they're in that category. Most likely it'll be the marketing and packaging that will sell.
rokdog49 May 14th, 2012, 08:21 AM Rumpelstiltskin Black Rope is a 50's wind. I've got one in one of my Teles and I love it.As StevieC says, Aaron will help you out with info. He is a great guy and a great winder.

I've got a pair of them in the post (since last Thursday), if the Royal Mail ever deign to deliver them. If they ever arrive I'll let you know how they sound.

Please do - if the Flat 50s are anything to go by, I think you'll be pleased.
plymman May 14th, 2012, 01:26 PM How about SD broadcaster's? I've got one in my Esquire, it has a really rich, woody, vintage tone, very smooth cleans.
