Robster May 10th, 2012, 07:24 AM Anyone use one of Allens TO8C output transformers in a Champ amp?
I may be getting another silverface Champ and was thinking of trying one of these to get more headroom. They look oversized and you can run 4 or 8 ohm speakers with it.

keithb7 May 10th, 2012, 09:18 PM I too am considering ordering one. I called David Allen today and discussed it actually. He said they are considerably larger than the stock transformer. He said it had the same mounting width, it's just taller. It can easily be wired with a micro switch to put out either 4 or 8 ohms. That way can be either run into either your combo with a single 8 ohm speaker or into a larger 2x12 extension cab wired to 4 ohms as most vintage fender cabs were.
Robster May 10th, 2012, 09:45 PM Thanks Keith, did he say much about how it would sound with the bigger transformer?
More bass? More clean headroom? Thanks!
keithb7 May 11th, 2012, 10:14 AM I didn't remember to ask but my research tells me more clean head room and better bass response. I think I'm going ahead and ordering one.
muchxs May 11th, 2012, 11:15 AM I've used TO11Cs in several Champs. I'm primarily lookin' for an impedance match to 8 ohms so I can ditch the stock eight incher and choose from a wider range of speakers.
The TO8C all by itself tightens up the bottom end a little bit. I go several steps further and re-voice, re-bias the amp so it plays BF clean. Sounds more like a BF Bandmaster or Bassman when I get done with it.
keithb7 May 13th, 2012, 03:18 AM I ordered my T08C yesterday. I will check in one I test it out.

Robster May 13th, 2012, 07:57 AM Great Keith, let us know how you like it please

Robster May 15th, 2012, 08:18 AM Turns out that I sold the Champ. Running it against my Musicmaster Bass amp was no contest.
Alex W May 15th, 2012, 08:52 AM I ordered a TO11C and had it installed in a SFVC. It already had an extra speaker jack installed in the chassis, so I had it wired with 4 ohms to the original jack and 8 ohms to the added jack. I run it with a 10" 8 ohm speaker.

A Champ is a strong 5 watts while an MMB is "maybe" 10 watts. Pretty easy to beef up a Champ so an MMB sounds wimpy by comparison. The stock MMB speaker ins't very good. The stock Champ speaker is worse if you're lookin' for volume.

...that would be the Champ to bring to the Musicmaster Bass convention.
Alex W May 15th, 2012, 10:13 AM There was a Musicmaster on my CL advertised for $300 recently. I had to just consciously prevent myself from buying it!
That speaker in the pic BTW is a Weber Silver Ten alnico. Right after I took the pic I removed it and put in a 10A125, but I ended up putting the Silver Ten back in because it had a unique sound and I was getting the same tweedy sound of the 10A125 from another amp. The Silver Ten has a cool rounded quality to its sound. Think Rod Stewart "Maggie May" noodling guitar fills. With the Silver Ten back in it's one of my favorite amps.

Totally OT but if you buy a Musicmaster Bass hold out for the later version with 6V6s. It has a couple minor improvements over the earlier version (like 6V6s!) like the power switch on the panel instead of the back of the pot.
I just picked up an early MMB with 6AQ5s. Paid a lot less than $300. I'm going to turn it upside down and shake out everything inside. I'll build it back up as a Musicmaster Bassman. I'm thinkin' a brown Deluxe preamp with a long tailed pair and cathode biased 6V6s. I'd go tweed Harvard but I'll have to make an adapter plate for the 12AT6. That's untidy so I'll go with a 12AX7. Fits the stock hole, punch an extra hole for another 12AX7 and I'm good to go.
