My Tele Pickup Mistakes..

Nothing earth shattering but worth mentioning...

Height - I really work on balancing pickups for the in between sound and treble/bass response. But I got to a point where I started adjusting my pickups higher and higher. Seemed to work great for the amp, but did not notice that I lost the dynamics of the pickups as well as the dirt pedals In fact after a period of time things sounded worse and figured these high end pickups need to go. So started adjusting them back down and everything was perfect again... the dynamics, the pickups and the dirt pedal. If I had not done that, I would be thinking of new pickups or a new dirt pedal.

Amps - I play through a DRRI with C12k and its good. But it always leaves me wanting a little more. Recently have on loan a 55 bandmaster. Wow and two thumbs up for 6L6s and mids. The guitar sounds so different and the pickups sound so much better (as well as the dirt pedal).

Moral of the Story - Its really easy to focus on the wrong thing in the sound food chain.

For vintage style Fender pickups I start with Fender's recommendations (6/64" bass side, 5/64" treble side, measured with string depressed at last fret).

While I may adjust a bit by ear, I'm usually there or almost there.
