How To Get This Tone?

What Guitar/Amp/Effects do you think could get me the tone of the lead guitar in this song?

Something with EMG 81/85 pups through a 5150 probably. That's what bands like SKSK / Circa Survive tend toward, or at least variations on that theme, with a Line 6 DL4.

Hey thanks for the reply, now allow me to complicate things. :D

If I used a set of passive humbuckers played through a combo amp with a delay pedal...could I get "in the ball park"?

Circa Survive's setup isn't so metal. One of them still plays a regular tele (used to be they both did). See here:

The other guitar seems to be normal enough. For the sound in the original vid, passive humbuckers will be fine. What sort of combo amp are we talking about, though? You probably need some sort of distortion pedal in addition to the delay. My OCD will do this sound well enough if the gain is up high.

I've looked at a few different combos but I'm still pretty new to the guitar side of things. With my bass, picking an amp was pretty easy. With a guitar the amps seems to be a much more important part of the equation.

I'm not making a lot of money at the moment, so the cheaper the better, but really any combo amp that can get me that tone and offer a little bit of versatility also would be great.

I thought I recognized your name from Talkbass. Welcome to the dark side!

I probably can't be too much help, as I only play guitar as a home hobby (bass is a more serious pursuit). However, I can tell you my strategy with guitar amps. Generally, I look for something that will produce a good clean to lightly overdriven sound on its own. Tubes are (usually) good, and I like to have a decent reverb built into the amp. The Blues Junior is one of many amps that fits into this category, and I happen to like them. They're easy to find on the used market. The amp sitting next to me is a Fender Super Champ XD.

Once I have an amp setup to do my basic clean(ish) sound, the rest of it can come from pedals. I use a Line 6 DL4 for delay and a Fulltone OCD for distortion, and can get these sorts of tones. Close enough for rock and roll, at least. I am certain that you could find suitable pedals for cheaper.

However, I should say that if you don't care about having a clean sound to use, there are probably better amps to look into than Fender-type combos. Not being too big on the high-gain sound myself, I couldn't tell you which amps to look into.

I dunno, but it definitely sounds like there is some keytar in there!

That sounds like a great distortion effect.

My main focus here though is the tone of the leads, the parts like this:

Basically I want to get as close to that tone as possible while spending as little cash as possible.

Thanks for posting this- really like the variations this pedal gives, fat and full all the way to searing bite. Might see how much they are in Oz. BTW damn nice nice guitar he's playing

It's a pretty typical Les Paul sound. I'd say something like a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck, maybe something hotter, like a SD Custom V bridge. You are going to want a bright sounding amp with plenty of gain, so the 5150 recommendation isn't far off. In fact, a 5150 Combo is my go-to high gain amp. I like to get the gain at the amp rather than pushing the amp with a hot pickup.

I'll keep my eye out for a used 5150 but it looks like a 6505 will be much easier to find.

Any delay pedal recommendations for a poor college student?

They are the exact same thing.

Yeah I figured that out.

Just watched a very comprehensive review of the 6505 and I really like that amp. Would be more than happy to have one.

So, I have an idea of what guitar, pickups, and amp to get. I know someone suggested the Line 6 DL4 for delay, is there anything out there that's simpler? The fewer knobs and buttons I have to mess with the better...(that and something cheaper than the DL4 would be nice).

...like a SD Custom V bridge.

Is this the SH-14 "Custom Five", or the SH-5 "Duncan Custom"?

Ibanez DE-7. Pretty simple, relatively cheap, versatile w/ the echo settings. There may be cheaper, but I don't know about quality.

Ooh, it's been so long since I bought one I forgot. I'm pretty sure it's the Custom Five.
