why are they shorting out, 72 custom pickups

hey guys i just rewired and shielded my 72 custom tele. MIM wrhb and a fred stuart lap wrap. at first just the bridge made no sound so i switched the ground and hot wire and that made the neck pickup dead too. i get continuity from the shielding to pots 3 way toggle but not from jack. i took the bare wire from the toggle straight to the jack. what are some reasonsfor pickups not to work. any help would help
