Grain Filling ash body

Telecaster 101
May 7th, 2012, 07:21 PM
First time finishing a ash body, I have seen telecaster finished purley in a briwax finish (clear) and it looks brilliant. Now with it being my first time this is what I was thinking of doing

1) Sanding the body down to allow grain filler to grip (rustins natural)
2) Apply Grain Filler
3) Sandback
4) Leave to dry for 24 hours
5) Once happy with smoothness apply Briwax with lint free cloth
6) buff up
7) rinse and repeat about 4-5 times to desired finish

Does this sound ok? Ive heard about having to use sanding sealer but i wasnt going to bother with that. Im not going to be refinishing this body ever again.

Depends on how smooth you want it. You can skip the grain filler and use the wax as a filler instead. If you want it glass smooth you have grain fill followed by sanding sealer, sand it till it's smooth and then wax.

I would not suggest just wax unless you are sure you want that result. Every wood working project I've done (not guitars) using just wax i either disappointed with the final result, or could have gotten a similar result with far less work.

What ezas said.

If you end up not liking the wax it is a horrible mess to try to refinish, as wax WILL penetrate past small gaps in the filler (especially if you omit sanding sealer, which there is no logical reason to do).

Try the ENTIRE process on some scrap wood FIRST. See how it turns out. But never just "do something" to your guitar without testing it first. Search the word "help" on this forum and see what pops up - it's usually someone on their first job who has never done whatever procedure they're doing before.

One thing about sealing the wood first with sanding sealer or shellac is that if you don't like the results it is easier to sand off and start over.
