We have 3 and I am 1 of them. So, when our Pastor is away at continuing education, or vacation, one of us leads the service and also gives the homily, which is a sermon by a layperson. I have done many, and if your research is good (know your Gospel) and you speak from the heart, it goes well. At our second service, which is our Praise and Worship service, we also lead and share our homily. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity arise to do the homily again, and at the 2nd service, I used my wireless rig to allow me to have the freedom to play from up front and lead the service too. (I'm usually over on the side, and my gear was still there...) It was odd being away from my monitor, but in churches where you play from up front, I think it would be much easier... Anyway, IMO, knowledge and honesty, will take you a long way, towards a God given message. On at least 1 occasion he has "preached from behind his guitar". We opened with a few songs, he preached one of his points, played a couple more, preached, played a couple of more, 1 more preaching session, then a song to close. |
