Non-Toxic Paint?

Hi Everybody. This seems like a basic question, but I've spent hours reading online and I still don't know the best way to get a good thin opaque black without using lacquer. I don't have any spray or safety equipment, and I'm even trying to move away from solvents and towards water-based products. Has anybody used a paint other than lacquer that won't be like slapping on a thick blanket of house paint?

Also, if there is such a thing I expect it will need a clear coat, and I'm thinking of going with General Finishes--either their water-based lacquer or the High Performance urethane. Any and all sugestions are welcome. Thanks.

Water based lacquer. You can buy water based pigments from stew mac. You can spray it through a Prevail sprayer.

Thanks, Colt. Would you thin the WB lacquer before running it through the preval, or do you think it'll spray ok as is? And would you clear coat? Thanks again.

You'd have to test different thinning ratios to see what will spray out of that prevail well. I would use a clear coat.

Colt - would those preval sprayers be a good option for someone wanting to do the occasional neck or guitar body as opposed to rattle cans?

Only if you wanted to mix your own colors.

I've used prevals on my last two necks and bodies that I've refinished with great results. Just take a little time to test your mixes and you can get great results.
