El Capistan vs Montavillian vs Aqua Puss

Hi! I just recorded three my favorite delays. Each of them has it's own unique sound. I hope this video would be helpful for somebody.

I like the Aqua Puss for slapback ONLY. Nothing comes close to it for slapback (except maybe the Maxon AD999) The El Cap sounds great but a bit too perfect sounding, you know?

I was hot for one for a while. 30 minutes after unboxing it, it was right back in the box.

Great features, but their buffer design drains out all your tone. Might be worth it if you are running a digital amp anyway.

I like that montavillian a lot. Now I just need one of those too...

Had the El Cap for about two months now.. And i like that one the best :p

Very mellow sounding, can really thicken up your sound in a non-obvious way.
From the moment i saw the first Youtube-video i knew i had to have it, and i've been practically buying nothing else but delays the last 5 years.

I've had the EHX 16SDD, memory boy, line6 echopark, DL4, and now the El Cap (and hoping to get a second one..)

Actually, I just messing around with monty and El Cap. End then I decide to record side-by-side with my another favorite delay, AP. El Cap seems like do not have enough midrange, which makes it sound more cold and "hi-fi", especially with overdrive before. On the other side it has a lot of tweakablility and other extra features. AP and especially Monty are thicker and sounds great with overdrive. Also, Monty has great ambiance sound, that CB site describes as: "the echos trail off almost forever over the horizon, disappearing into the ether rather than crash landing back to earth".

Nice vid! All sound great but I am obsessed with the Monte. I've decided it's the greatest delay pedal EVER (it kicked a beloved AD999 off my board.

Hey Jester, your vid sound like you don't understand the many functions of The Capistan, especially TAPE AGE, LOW END CONTOUR, TAPE BIAS. So I suggest you to read many times the doc and experiment by yourself.
For certain guitarists, the effects HAVE to keep simple for them to be usable.

I found your video to be unfair for the El Capistan. You are stuck on one and only sound , a "cold and hi-fi" sound as you said, very bright. Begin to turn the TAPE AGE pot (on 10 on your demo, turn it to 4). Try the other secondary functions (LOW END CONTOUR and TAPE BIAS), and see what happen.

Agreed. That riff was bomb. Totally my kind of thing.

I think I like the Aqua Puss the best and the El Capistan the least.

Ok, Mal Paso. I want to say that the setting jester choosed don't let us compare the three delay. He can achieve a much warmer soud on the Strymon just by adjusting the TAPE AGE pot . I want to add that I'm not sponsorised by Strymon ( but no problem if they want to :)

You guys that are lusting over the Montavillian might want to check the Classifieds...

Thanks for the video comparison, Jester. I tried to ignore the El Cap because of my strict $200 ceiling for effects pedals. But the other two sound great, especially the Catalinbread.

Yes, it can be set "warmer" (Actually just cut some more high end), but then it would become more muddy, compare with other. Actually, El Capistan, like any other delay, has it's own certain sound, which can be tweaked slightly to your own taste. Montavillian also set in one "cut" setting. On my own experience with whole three pedals, I set them to show basic sound of them. And they really sound different.

I think the video Jester did does a very good job of showing the different tones of the 3 pedals. Everyone knows the el cap is tape echo and does way more, that wasn't the purpose.
I also loved Nicks video of the monta, and really shows how great tone an echo pedal can have, and he explains the advantages of it. Great pedal!
