anyone found anything that works as edging? my board is probably going to be flat, so need something that will make it a bit more rigid/ protect it from knocks etc.

bear in mind I have a limited amount of tools so the simpler the better

Cheers!!

Home Depot. They will have some aluminum strips that are made for the front of stairs or the edge of a counter or something.

Buy a $6 hack saw for metal. Saw 45 degree cuts on the ends, Screw it to the board from the top. There is an episode of Wade's Guitar Shop podcast that shows how to do this. If you have a friend who has a drill, that is useful for getting the screws to go in flush, and you can add 4 holes through the board to add metal cabinet handles.

If you need pics, I can show you.

EDIT: Ah, England. Don't know if you have Home Depot. Local hardware store then.

As above, that's what many of us use for our DIY boards.

Also visit the kitchen wares isle for your handles....

Aluminium u-channel as already stated is available from B&Q and the like. A junior hacksaw and a cheap mitre block will only add a few quid to the bill.

perfect guys! found some nice ish handles on ebay, and there's a b&q near me, although I'm also inclined to check out wickes

does the edging generally come with holes pre drilled?

Get birch ply 1/2 inch, and flat black acrylic paint. The birch is light, the flat black doesn't reflect stage lights, and when you ding into the wood you just touch it up, dries in a few minutes.

can anyone suggest a size for a drillbit? so I can drill the holes in the aluminium.
and also perhaps one for any drilling I might need to do on the ply?

.5" birch plywood is ideal. As for the aluminum edging, use the "U" channel type so it covers the top, side and underside of the edges. I prefer the rivets over the screw as it goes thru the whole structure to make is secure. As for the top of the board, there will be a slight gap between the aluminum "U" channel because of how they are measured relative to how plywood or wood is actually measured. Because of the difference, a laminate is a better alternative to just paint, and will make the edging fit snug to the board.

Don't for get rubber feet for the board.
