adkima00 May 4th, 2012, 05:22 PM Hi guys - Does anyone have a link, or a succinct procedure written up for starting up a 5e3 for the first time? I soldered the last wire today. I'm building a dim bulb tester tonight and will be giving my deluxe power tomorrow for the first time - after thoroughly going over it one last time checking for errors.
I've been able to find a procedure for starting a new amp for the first time, but I've not been able to find the procedure that had voltages specific to the 5e3 circuit. Thanks in advance.
Ash Telecaster May 4th, 2012, 05:48 PM I wish I knew, but I will be watching for an answer. Just ordered the parts for my 5e3 Proluxe this week.
boredguy6060 May 4th, 2012, 06:14 PM What The usual practice is,
With no tubes, no inputs, or speakers connected, turn amp on...and watch and smell. Looking for any smoke or smell of something burning.
Next install rec tube. Watch tubes to see if any are overheating, trannies overheating, anything smoking.
Next install preamp and speaker connections, again check tubes for red plating(overheating)
Next install power tubes and repeat above.
If all is well, plug in your guitar.
It's always a good thing to get out the DMM and check the chassis, for any voltage. You might even move this up towards the top of the list. This was something I started doing after a forum member was firing up his build for the first time and found line voltage at the input jack by accident. That could have been catastrophic.
Hopefully by following this or any other procedure, if something is wrong you can find it before it does any damage.
If you feel like a new papa when the magic begins flowing from your creation and you can't stop thinking of what to build next, you have arrived.
muchxs May 4th, 2012, 07:51 PM I plug it in. If I have a pilot light I crank the bright volume to "9". Smack a big ol' chord. Works every time...
Knock wood.
Telenut62 May 4th, 2012, 08:09 PM It's all here, may be a bit overstated, but better safe than sorry..

+1. I do this checking voltages at each step.

Thanks Boredguy and JCN - This is how I was planning to start it up based on things that I'd found on the web. But what I haven't been able to find - is what voltages to check and what those voltages should be - specifically for a 5e3. Can you document that info for me if you have it?
guitjopicka May 5th, 2012, 09:26 AM I basically follow the procedure outlined above, but definitely have always had speakers connected.

here's the most complete I've found: http://home.comcast.net/~seluckey/amps/5e3/5e3.pdf. remember that you're likely not going to be exact -- just in the neighborhood.

THANK YOU! That's exactly what I was looking for!
