If you have a tap tempo delay, even if it doesn't have a dotted eighth setting, you can tap it in, but you have to count the quarter notes in time while you are doing the song. There is no metronome on most delays. Count quarter notes, break into eighths, then into sixteenths. While counting the sixteenths start counting them in threes, tap on the ones.

The Boss DD-20 requires an external tap tempo button to tap in your tempos. Some pedals allow you to tap quarter notes and have your echoes come out as dotted eighths. The Line 6 Echo Park is one that does it.

Hold the DD20 right fs down for 2 secs it becomes a tap. You can even select hitting both fs simultaneously to change presets, so you get both of all worlds.

I generally leave mine on 1/4notes so I can tap quarters, dotted eighths or eighths as needed.

Oh, the DD20 allows the quarter tap with dotted repeats among others.

I guess maybe an older model didn't have the tap or I came to a wrong conclusion. I was looking at videos of the DD-20 and the guy had a separate tap tempo switch and the comments indicated that you needed one of those in order to tap the tempo. I stand corrected. I bought a Line 6 Echo Park to replace my Digitech DL-8 because I really need the dotted repeats.

Edit: Okay, I went back and watched it closer this time, and the guy has two delays, including a DD-20. The other delay requires the external tap switch!:oops:

When I first got into heavy delay usage, I was concerned about this. But it's turned out to be less of a problem than I'd imagined. I was wrongly thinking the delay had to stay in sync while free-wheeling through the rest of the song... and given that assumption, of course you'd end up way out of sync by the end of the song. But the way delay works, it's like you are "starting over" every time you play a new note, so off by a tiny bit isn't going to be noticeable. And, if the song is heavily driven by a prominent delay effect, the band should really listen for that and stay in time with it - so basically your delay effect is keeping tempo. Get the timing right, and everyone else will be right.

Not to say Bucky's warning isn't worth noting... but just telling my thought process as I began to use delay a lot. Or maybe I'm the only one who would be so dumb as to think it would work that way. :-)

NOt sure whether I've got anything much to add except to agree and clarify! I play some HU stuff and use a DD20. As has been mentioned you can use the right-hand pedal for tap tempo by holding it down but you then can't switch easily between presets. I use the option of an external footswitch for tap. I do take the opportunity during 'downtime' in a song to occasionally retap as, unless you're playing to a click track, the tempo will change slightly - but it's never been a big problem.

I find the dotted 8th with one repeat only to be invaluable for something like 'The Time Has Come' - I can't play at that speed without assistance!

In fact if you check the manual there's a 'hidden' setting depending on what you hold down upon power-up that will allow you use the right pedal for tap tempo AND both pedals simultaneously for preset switching. I think.

I probably read that when I first got the unit, then promptly forgot it when I got the external footswitch! Takes up a little more board space but makes things easier to manage for me.
