What is the best course of action?

PLEASE, IF YOU ARE NOT A FAN OF APPLE OR APPLE PRODUCTS DO NOT RESPOND. I’M LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION NOT A DEBATE!

Since I-Tunes is a default location for mixes from Logic and Garageband I thought I would post here.

The problem is that when I-Tunes opens and I try to play a song, nothing happens. The track does not play. Everything else functions like updates, I-Phone back ups, jumping from track to track. Everything but that most important thing: Playback. This just started last night so I may have done something wrong.

Now when I restart the computer the tracks will play back but that is not a solution.

Should I Back the music library to an external hard drive and uninstall and re-install I-Tunes? Or is there a better solution?

Here is the set up:
Apple iMac 27" 2.9GHz Quad Core i7 with 14GB of RAM (running Logic Studio 9 and Garageband and everything is updated software-wise)
SaffirePro40 FireWire Interface (Firewire from computer)
Glyph 1TB Quad Desktop HD (firewire from Pro 40)
Glyph 1TB Desktop HD (firewire from 1st hard-drive)
PreSonus Fader Port (USB)
VRMBox (connect via SPDIF cable to the Pro 40)
Line 6 UX2 (connected to computer via USB. The analog outputs are plugged into 2 inputs in the Pro 40)

Thanks in advance

Do you get any message when you hit play? (Can't find the track, etc.)

And a shot in the dark...Check your playback and remote settings in iTunes preferences AND your playback settings in your computer's System Preferences.

Funny, I seem to remember having this problem; I'll try to recall what happened. You say you have everything updated, that would've been my first question. And iTunes still doesn't play when you disconnect ALL of that other hardware?

Doesn't play, as in it doesn't move the track along, or just doesn't sound?

If it's not *playing* (vs. not making a sound), my guess is it doesn't see an output device currently configured, or it's possible you've got a device configured, but there's another application that has it in some mode that prevents sharing/use by other apps. You've got a bunch of them there, so I would check what your system settings are. For the no sound problem, same thing, really, check the settings and see where the sound is *supposed* to go, and then see how many apps you have open trying to use that same hardware.

What makes it really annoying is if I restart the computer and open I-Tunes then it plays a track, everything is normal. But this problem manifested itself last night.

When I left the house this morning I shut down everything so when i get home tonight I will just start everything and turn the computer back on. If it works then I will put it to sleep and re-activate the computer and start I-Tunes again and re-trace my steps.

The track doesn't move. You can mouse over the slider and pull the slider to aanother part of the song and the time would be correct. It just doesn't move when you hit play. Weird.

vjf, I'm assuming all latest shipping versions of the software (OS, Logic, iTunes) if not, update all (although you don't have to go to lion, just the latest version of the OS that shipped.

if you click on the subsequent track after the non playing track does it play?

If yes, then some how the 'preview' part has gotten munged in the transfer from logic to itunes... or itunes got stopped in the preview process and the preview is empty and never has a 'start' to it... rare, but I have seen it.

One thing you may want to try, is if your playlists are not super hard to replicated... launch itunes with the option key down and choose 'create' new library... this will let you start fresh.. see if the problem persists and write back...

we can resolve this...

Getbent-I am running Lion (updated last year) and every piece of equipment is also running with the latest updates.

I can tell you what I was doing when I discovered the problem. I ripped a CD of Klaatu's first album re-issue from the band) and after I ripped it I ejected the disc and checked the library clicked on a song and no play back I did go into "import settings" and changed it to AIFF.

After that I re-started the computer and opened I-Tunes and everything was fine. I tried it this morning and the problem came back.

I will try your suggestion but I am going to back up the library to the external HD just in case.

I blame Klaatu - the Canadian Beatles!

Quitting the weird or unresponsive application often works without having to restart the computer.

Cheers,
Geoff

Not in this case. I-Tunes still functioned, but when you hit play, the track would show up but would not play. The track would just sit there and mock you. So it wasn't totally unresponsive.

I tried closing I-Tunes and reopening and the problem would still be there but after a restart it functioned as it should.

But Getbent's suggestion worked so everything is fine.

Klaatu rules! and they got control of their catalog so their albums are available again www.klaatutheband.com

Waiting for "Hope", "Sir Army Suit", "Magentalane", "Sun Set" and "Solology" to arrive from the Great White North soon.
