Hi guys, I am looking into buying a baby Taylor soon but don't know whether to have the spruce or mahogany top model. What are the pros and cons of both? Which one would you pick?
Cheers

My personal preference is mahogany but you're better off trying both and picking whichever you prefer. There is a thread somewhere about the tonal qualities of both the woods you mentioned, just use the search function on here. Steveareno April 30th, 2012, 05:03 PM Don't know much about the Babies, but the new Taylor Mini plays and sounds really good for the money. It's got a very cool snap-in pickup you can add. There's even some used ones starting to turn up on CL here in LA. Swang on, ROADMAN May 1st, 2012, 11:04 AM I've got an older Spruce top and really the "tone" is something you wouldn't need to consider in deciding which wood sounds best...they're little guitars meant to be thrown on a couch or left in the den to grab for a quick little session when the mood hits you...they don't have enough wood to them to make much difference in tone...get the one you can most afford and looks good to you re-reading your post I realized the sound comparison wasn't really your question .... that would leave esthetics which is always subjective...my Spruce top is fading to a lovely dark syrup colour and looks beauty...I think I'd go with the hog ...the new Baby's are pasty looking... dqami May 1st, 2012, 11:16 AM Spruce for a bright tone; hog for a warmer tone. |
