alnicopu April 30th, 2012, 12:40 AM Just got home from seeing Tom Petty here in Atlanta. Great show. Even had a joke about a rough bar in Gainsville FL filled with Hippy killers and guitar thieves. His entire stage set up was like a Fender amp advertisement. He even had a little tweed champ (or princeton) tucked in there with a mike on it sitting right next to what looked like a Princeton Reverb. Interesting since I read an interview with him and Mike Campbell saying they weren't partial to Fenders because they were too "growly" for them. That was about 10 years ago so I guess he has changed his tune (pun intended) since then.
I highly recommend seeing them. They seemed to really enjoy performing and it showed.

Jack S May 1st, 2012, 01:55 PM Granted, the last time I saw the band was sometime in the 1980s, but every time I saw them they had Fender amps on stage.
purpletele May 1st, 2012, 03:10 PM Yeah, Mike Campbell has been using the Tweed Deluxe and Blackface Prinseton set-up for years. Its a killer sound.
If you haven't seen Tom Petty Live DO IT. One of the best shows I've ever been to.

malonius May 1st, 2012, 03:17 PM Going to see TP & TH when they come to the UK in the early summer. Actually going to see them whilst en route to play a gig with my band. Really looking forward to it. Campbell is most certainly a very under-rated guitarist. Love the great differences in tone, and the use of different guitars, Tele's, Ric's, Gibsons and Deusenbergs. Can't wait...!

Agreed about Campbell, but the constant changing of guitars after every song was kind of annoying. In fact, my only complaint was that the show didn't flow very well as, after about half of the songs, they turned all the lights off when switching guitars. The tonal differences were so minute, except the songs where Mike played an LP with a wah, and Tom's accoustic stuff, Tom could have kept with his Ric. and Mike with his Broadcaster (which, surprisingly, he did not use).
' burn 08 May 1st, 2012, 05:14 PM I wanted to go to that show, but just couldn't make it. I've never seen them and I badly want to.
Canuckcaster May 1st, 2012, 09:16 PM I understand all the guitar changes interrupting the flow, but I love all of the beautiful guitars that he plays. To me the changes are worth it.
