like the title says. it doesn't come through the amp but i cant figure it out. the string sits about 1/64 off the first fret like my ron kirn book says. the neck relief seems correct as does the string height. i really enjoy playing unplugged around the house and i am hoping someone can give me a suggestion on the cause or a fix. i hope it isn't the nut cause i don't think my nut skills are that great, ha nut skills, BTW the guitar in question is a 2011 MIA tele. thank you, Jeb Stuart

If the string only buzzes when played open, then it likely is the nut.

Read how to check it here: http://frets.com/FretsPages/Musician/GenSetup/NutAction/nutaction.html

thank you for the link. i did their test and it seemed to pass with a small bit of space between string and fret 1 when depressing the 3rd. i am wondering if the micro tilt could be used in a situation like this? thank you again for your response. i also admit that this could be a pick attack thing but i dont know, it is a new development and i dont think i am hitting the string that hard although if i strum lightly it doesn't happen.

Micro tilt (or shimming) is only necessary if you don't have enough adjustment range in the saddles to set the action where you like it.

String buzz can be 5 things, either alone in combination: nut slots too low (or just badly cut), action too low, too much relief, high frets, or a backbow.

You said your relief and action "seem" correct. What do they measure?

Far fetched, but you _can_ get buzzing if your pickups are too high. More common with 'buckers but still worth looking into.

the neck relief is at about .010 if i remember correctly and string height is at 5/64 i think, what my fender book says, and the string heights is at 1/64 at the first fret. thanks again koko. wish i had your knowledge

Tighten your truss rod about 1/8-1/4 turn to get the neck straighter. Fender's spec is a max of .010, which is still too much.

After the neck is straighter, you'll need to raise the action a bit to get it back to 5/64", and that will take care of the worst of it.
