When Doves Cry

Anybody know what Prince was using on the intro to "When Doves Cry?" It sounds like fuzz, but I can't tell what else he might have going. I tried to embed the song, but YouTube has the video blocked.

pretty sure its his amp and studio eq of sorts. read an interview with him from that era where he spoke that he took very little time with individual sounds and more on how it all came together. alot gear he used untill the 90's was cheesball 80's gear. tele excluded!

The song is not on youtube, so I can't give it a listen. IIRC, I would say distortion + octave.

sounds like high gain and octave to me, though you probably could do it with an octave fuzz too.

I think the key to a lot of his stuff then was octave down sound and fuzz.

He worked the octave pedal on many solos.

There is no bass guitar in "When Doves Cry". Just that big chunky guitar. I think the production was cool. I was 19 or 20. Man that was a while back.

Something like the Foxx Tone machine or Dano French Toast will get you there fast.

Boss Octave Pedal and Boss Turbo Distortion. Some studio compression.

Agreed. The Purple One has had a Boss OC-2 octave pedal (the brown one) on his board for a long time. So he likely played the riff higher up on the neck and used the pedal to get the lower octave(s) to fatten it up.
