djalt April 26th, 2012, 09:34 AM Here'a twist on another thread where we as players rate ourselves.
Not to copycat, but here's one where we can allow peer review.
I'll go first.
Original song. 'Snowed Inn'.
Played keys, PW Bbender, looped drums, sequenced bass.

Fire away, boys!
Jakedog April 26th, 2012, 09:52 AM Is there a way to hear the tracks without downloading?
djalt April 26th, 2012, 09:55 AM Sorry Jakedog, I guess you don't use dropbox?
It's a legit way to share stuff and alot of music guys use it. But I'll try to repost it somehow...
emu! April 26th, 2012, 09:56 AM Yeah. Can't download here at work...draconean filter.
Also, we need to watch you perform as to validate your stage presence.
djalt April 26th, 2012, 10:48 AM Ah, yes. The 'presence' thread had me giggling like a schoolgirl...
djalt April 26th, 2012, 10:50 AM For those who have dropbox and don't have Big Bro looking over their shoulder:

Jakedog April 26th, 2012, 10:52 AM I guess I'll have to look into dropbox. I've never even heard of it...
getbent April 26th, 2012, 10:59 AM the dropbox method sucks because you end up stuck with the track in itunes...
a weblink or youtube link is way better, not invasive, not a download... so, yeah, I have dropbox and it is okay for old style file transfers, but you really need a link where we can listen in a web page... so, how good are you on linking... I give you a C because, yes, you can get the track but you eliminate a huge part of your audience because they won't do it the way you have it set up...
and the 'oh you don't have dropbox comment is pretty lame' if you have to describe the technology.. it probably sucks... it should be easy and just work.
the track....
doesn't highlight your playing (which I really liked)
the hokey 80's 'sledgehammer' arrangement sounds dated and heavy handed... if you had gated drums you'd have the phil collins trifecta!
The guitar parts sounded spirited and in the pocket and I want to hear more...
So, your playing... I give a strong B+ (just not enough of the songs focus to get to the A)
the track... hmmmm.... C... I wouldn't have kept listening except I really wanted to hear you play.
djalt April 26th, 2012, 11:37 AM thanks getbent. Honesty. ouch. :)
But this reminds me of my high school days. Showed up late for most classes, never did homework, ace the final exam, finished with a 75. But now Im older and wiser.
So you've actually encouraged me. Kind of one-offed this track. If I apply myself,...hmm...
djalt April 26th, 2012, 12:37 PM Any thoughts on the Ireland clips?
jefrs April 26th, 2012, 01:25 PM The MOV files do open in Firefox but the MP3 has to be downloaded to your player (iTunes or such).
Re the MP3 imo you need to re-visit the EQ for its grating edginess, gritty top-end, and strange bed-spring echo/reverb. I like to test these out on the CD player in the car i.e. on a relatively poor quality system in a noisy environment.
Re the Irish pub sessions, it was difficult to tell who was winning, down to poor sound on the recordings, but it looked fun.
TG April 26th, 2012, 01:52 PM Where was the pub session?

it shouldn't hurt! Your playing is really nice...
placed in an arrangement that you really liked and worked on... it would make for an awesome thread where folks would gush (if you look at some of those, you'll see the responses are super positive) but, if you don't put much effort into it... the response will match the effort....
(look at the build thread for the guy who uses the star war figures... a love fest)
Feel good, YOU sound great!
bargoedboy April 26th, 2012, 04:03 PM I thought the "snowed in" was ruined by the drums a bit, but liked your vibrato and what you did on there.
The Ireland thing seemed to be playing catch up, not easy to just sit in and follow the flow. Good go though:cool:
djalt April 26th, 2012, 05:37 PM Feel good, YOU sound great!
Wise words for any musician.
Hmmm. stay tuned...
sir humphrey April 26th, 2012, 05:53 PM As others have said - put it somewhere that can be streamed, can't be arsed to download.
It's a bit of a dangerous question to ask on a forum like this, you'll get a few kinds of answers.
Many of those who play for a living are like theatre lovies - so insecure about being judged themselves they'll always say positive things about others who expose their playing to public scrutiny for fear they will be judged harshly themselves in some sort of performance karma.
Or those who aren't very good but live to run down those who are better than them (and who they think revel in being better than even though it never crossed their minds - I'm think John Mayer hate here)
Or, if you are lucky, people who - pro or amateur - are confident and happy enough in their ability or limitations to give a genuine appraisal of your playing.
The latter are very rare. I suspect Getbent is one of them, so listen to him.

I meant where in Ireland?
djalt April 26th, 2012, 06:41 PM Ha. like the old 'who's on first' joke.
The sessions were at McGann's pub in Doolin. Crazy little place.
I'll blog about it sometime and share the link.
