I'm looking to build a La Cabronita and wondering if anyone has any opinions and/or experience w/ B. Hefner necks: http://www.bhefner.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=6
They seem nice and give you many options to really make it custom.

Also, if you've had a Warmoth or a USA neck, how much prep have you had to do to it prior to the finished product. I noticed B Hefner has a $90 prep fee is you choose to have it completely set up.

Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I actually received a B. Hefner Tele neck about 6 weeks ago after ordering it in November last year. I was a little scared by all the horror stories you can find on this forum (which I didn't see until after ordering), but Bernie replied proptly to my emails before I ordered, and while the emails were somewhat 'blunt' he was always helpful in his own way. Just a shame the 6 week lead time shown on the site was so far off, I did end up sending a couple of emails asking what the progress was and had the old 'we're working on it and will have it shipped next week' responses but it got here eventually.
Anyway, I went for a quatersawn maple with rosewood fingerboard, faux clay inlays, pretty standard, and it turned out real nice, nice woods and feels great, haven't got round to putting it on a guitar yet though. One thing that really did impress me was the fret job, I've used allparts necks in the past and had to do a fair amount of work but on this one I could probably get away with doing nothing at all.
I'd have a look at the other posts about Hefner on this forum before making a decision, definitely a lot of mixed views on his stuff, I was one of the lucky ones thankfully.

Do a search here for Hefner necks. There has been plenty of discussion about them.

I just finished a Musikraft neck for a friend, it it required no finish prep. It came perfectly sanded and sealed with shellac.

Pretty much the same experience as mine -- six weeks turned into twelve, but I received two very nice necks. I had previously bought a neck from Bernie when he was selling on EBay -- that is also a very nice neck.

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated.

Colt, I've been talking to Marc Rutters regarding the steel wool/vinegar stain. He likes the idea as well. As for the weathered finish look, he is taking samples and even sandblasting wood samples to get the "real" weathered look. Thanks for all your help, I will be applying the methods when I get the body and the samples from Marc Rutters. Jerry
