I think Marty looks cool, ya the hair is a little out there but he's an Entertainer with a capitol E. Looking like the average guy off the street doesn't do it, that's why he dresses like he does ( and the Superlatives too) and created an image you can't soon forget. Plus he backs it up with the best musicianship. The chick just don't get it...... bye bye

Thats a little better than the Marty look, but barely.
At least he is not wearing a blue spandex cowboy suit like his musicians.

Big Marty Stuart fan, and I like his whole thing (giant hair, neckerchief...). It works for him because he owns it and it's part of his charm, but there's no way on earth I'd EVER try and defend his visual style choices to my wife or anyone. That would just be crazy. At the same time, somehow I'd be a little disappointed if he cut off all his hair and just started wearing jeans and looked like anyone off the street. It would be like a part of him died. :(

I love Marty Stewart's guitar playing and singing, but I can't stand his look.
Still, that doesn't ever stop me from dialing in on listening to his music, i just take it for what it is.

It's the tradition he comes from rooted deep in country & western music.
His look has gone in and out of style several times over, but his music never does.
So while I don't really give a damn how he dresses, he does look tacky as all get out.

From the "pompamullett" to the tan and body suits and stitching, he's way otu there and looks like some kind of gay troubador with that damn neckerchief. But whatever floats his boat I guess.

Maybe Marty's just messin' with everybody's head. I can't think of anyone in show buisness or anyone I know who has a better time living life. He genuinely enjoys playing to the crowd, and being IN the band. He's the guy out in front, but he gives ALL his guys their turn in the spotlight, he wouldn't be Marty if he didn't look like that. That string bender thing, try it, you'll see how hard it is to get it in the right place. Even Marty says he doesn't do it as good as Clarence did, but he does it pretty good!

It's strange to imagine there are folks out there that have never attended a Cowboy Poetry Gathering and wore a wild rag. For longer than I can remember Cowboy suits, fancy boots and Wild Rags have been a part of my stage appearance. It kind throws ya a curve ball when you hear folks that don't understand that there is a whole sub-culture that all dress, and understand how cool a pair of fancy inlayed boots, big hair, and silk scarf are. Sometimes I almost feel sorry for them folks and start to shed a tear over their ignorance of what is cool and hip.
That's been my fashion style since I was just a youngster and got hooked on Hank!

 Sure. No other nation in the world has ever seen western movies or western tv series... I was born and raised in France and had the whole outfit as a kid ( hat, gun and holster, bandana, vest, etc. ), watched countless westerns on tv, etc. I even spent my favorite birthday ever in a Wild West theme park near Paris that had a buffalo, a train attacked by "indians" and shootouts... Is it really that strange? Why would I attend a Cowboy Poetry Gathering when the closest cowboys are hundreds of miles away? Plus, I don't like country music. Why would I wear a "wild rag" when I live in an urban neighbourhood?

Living in the Sonoran Desert, you probably can't swing a dead armadillo without hitting something cowboy. Vancouver is a whole different place.

On the other hand, have you ever had a box full of toques and mittens in your hall closet? Have you ever dug through a drawer to find your roll of hockey tape? Have you stayed up late to watch the Spengler Cup Final?

It's not strange at all that different people do not participate in other people's cultural pastimes. I am quite aware of cowboy culture, but I don't experience it.

This thread... man. I need a drink.

Cowboy is a state of mind... and whether you ride the wilds of the subway in Queens, NY (or Waylonfans france or telemarkmans prairies of Norway) it doesn't matter if you ride and shoot or any of that (and I say that as someone who takes solace in lots of wide open space, horses, cows, getting to shoot a varmint now and again, and feel normal wearing a cowboy hat and boots...which I wore to work friday)

Marty is doing the cool glitzy cowboy homage... an era that I love.. when country music was really super popular all over the place and the entertainers brought a little glitz into lives that might be a bit drab...

Marty is a good ol boy and comfortable in his own skin and able to really live the old ways... bless him for that!

I love stage outfits even if I don't wear them all the time... they are a lot of fun and the fans love them...

if you follow the cowboy code, you can live anywhere, wear what you want and just enjoy life... it isn't a part in a play, it is just a part of life...

okay, I am heading out of doors boys... y'all keep the convo going about hair styles and who is okay and who ain't.

State of mind? Code?

Please elucidate.

I enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy wide open spaces. I have spend time in the hills and the prairie, have traversed the wind-swept passes of the Chilcotins, and have lived in the sunburnt splendour of the Australian outback.
I have enjoyed riding horses from time to time, and I have lived on a farm, upon which were a pair of cows. I ain't never shot me no varmint, however. Nor have I worn cowboy hats and boots, though I do have a wide-brimmed hat purchased in the gold-mining town of Barkerville. On the other hand, you seem to be saying that the hat and boots are not necessary for one to be a cowboy.
I own a Telecaster and have sung the songs of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Dwight Yoakum, among others, in front of a line-dancing audience.
Adding it all up, have I met enough of the cowboy code to be considered a cowboy?

I own a Telecaster and have sung the songs of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Dwight Yoakum, among others, in front of a line-dancing audience.
Adding it all up, have I met enough of the cowboy code to be considered a cowboy?

Absolutely!

State of mind?

Yes. You don't need the accoutrements, or experience the wide open spaces. It's a state of being. You can be a "cowboy" and live in Manhattan.

Adding it all up, have I met enough of the cowboy code to be considered a cowboy?

That's up to you, not us.

But for the sake of the question, I'd say no, you're not a "cowboy". You talk too much.

Speaking of Elsinore, I'll bet you a case that there are more "cowboys" living in Vancouver (pop 600,000) than there are in the county that I live in (pop 17,000.)

I'm one of two guys in Cerro Gordo county that wears a cowboy hat.

Post of the day!
Thanks!

Can you be a cowboy while wearing a hockey helmet and pads as you ride the bull?

sure .. i think safety gear is required by the PBRA or regional laws

"Bull riding helmet"
a rodeo helmet that is designed to provide substantial protection for a person's head and face during bull riding.

"Protective vest"
protective clothing that covers a person's chest and torso to prevent or mitigate injury to those areas.

"Rodeo"
an exhibition or competition, without regard to whether the participants are compensated, involving various dangerous activities related to cowboy skills, including:

(A) riding a horse, with or without a saddle, with the goal of remaining on the horse while it attempts to throw off the rider;

(B) riding a bull;

(C) roping an animal, including roping as part of a team;

(D) wrestling a steer; and

(E) riding a horse in a pattern around preset barrels or other obstacles.

Agreed. Must suck to be saddled with a 'signature' look--in this case, a very bad signature.

+1000!

I saw Marty yesterday. One of the best shows I have seen in a long time! They all have the look they because it works. I could not imagine how the show would've been with out the suits, hair, comedy. They are a great group of entertainers and players to boot. Not to mention one of the most iconic telecasters of all time. Most people who own guitars with that kind of history lock them up somewhere. Marty plays his piece of history every day. Just seeing that guitar gives me goose bumps every time I see him playing it. One of my favorite acts of all time.

BTW, I understand the neckerchief as cowboy wear, but Marty's just looks, soft.

Your new theme song :

qBTES9rRNro

Believe it or not hoss... that's the song that "converted" me back when I was kid.

I bought the album on the first day it came out and have played it on a weekly basis, without fail, ever since then. It's one of my favorite records all time, bar none.

I remember back in 2005 (I was 12 or 13) right when the song came out and the record wasn't out yet... I listened to the song about 100 times a day and drove my parents nuts. Before that I had listened to Kenny Chesney and Tim Mcgraw (cold shiver).

I can't remember where I first heard it (maybe on the radio), but I remember vividly the actual experience of having the sound hit my ears. That kick drum, Telecaster, Steel, and voice like rolling thunder that Mr. Ray Scott has. It was unlike anything I'd ever heard before, and has shaped my life.

Ever since that day I've listened to the old stuff and loved the twang to death. It inspired me to learn to play lead guitar and buy a Telecaster. I knew as soon as I heard it that I wanted to be a musician more than anything.

So y'all can blame Ray Scott for my tastes.

I don't blame Kay for not liking Marty Stuart's haircut, she's a city girl after all. Love her to death, but we both know that bringing a country idiot like me into the city is a recipe for misery, for both of us. Same goes for bringing her out here to live. It's a shame. But I ain't givin' up music like this for anybody. It's been there for me when women weren't.

Just for the record... just like the song says, Kay is a HUGE Whitney Houston fan.

Very true!

The one change that the people who started the crossover in the 70s, like Gram Parsons, is that they brought the longer hair thing with them. I see country performers today with longer hair than I had back then when I used to get beaten up for having long hair by the local cowboys (this is 60s - 70s). It must be tough for them not to have anyone to pummel now...

Love 'pompamullett" though1 VWD!

Sad fact is that everybody who posted in the 1st two pages like it was an open audition for Joan Rivers assistant fashion critic looks like a flaming dork to somebody else. Difference between Marty and his critics is that Marty is too busy being true to his passion to give 2 turds whether anybody doesn't like his "look".

Lerb, Here's some friendly and earnest advice. The first time a girl/woman tries to get you to change your style, be it hair, clothes, boots etc., politely remove yourself from that situation. It starts there and only gets worse!
