Drilled tuner holes all night

in my mind.

I think I'm obsessing too much on my build. I'm not even planning to build the neck until the Fall. . . .

I'm thinking about it a lot because I don't have a drill press, so my brain was feverishly working out drill guides, fences, bits, etc., all night. I had to get out of bed at 2:30 to try to reset my brain.

This morning, my head is full of holes.

Stewmac use to sell a tuner hole jig that you didn't need a drill press to drill tuner holes.

I just went thru it, much of it for the first time. It is a step at a time and it all works out. Too much help here to fail.

but...I do the same thing. I obsess at night about my next step in the build.

Yeah, but this isn't even CLOSE to the next step! I haven't even bought the neck blank yet!

And thanks, Colt. They still sell 'em. They're about 30 bucks--not out of reach, but definitely in the "hm, how can I do that cheaper?" range.

If you have a drill press, you can make your own.

If I had a drill press, I'd be a different person.

How's your aim?

Any .35 caliber round will be pretty close for a Tele...

Just sayin'

Same problem as with my hand drill; staying square to the target after the first shot....

Set a combo square so that it stands upright next to the holes, with the ruler part sticking up. It's relatively easy to visually keep the bit parallel to the combo square as you drill (or, at least, "parallel enough"); it's not enough to obsess about, IMO. I, too, wish I had a drill press, but it's not really all that tough to get acceptable holes by hand. Like anything else, it just takes practice. Keep at it!

I will. I felt like I was actually coming up with a pretty viable method last night--but what I wanted to do was sleep....

oooo. Nice jig. I want, I want, I want. Even with my drill press I have a hard time getting things lined up. I am such a woodworking butcher.
Thanks for that link!!
