Wally Pedals April 22nd, 2012, 11:52 PM Hey guys, just wanted to share another song off my new album. Its called
Devil in a Whisky Bottle.
I'm just starting to get a little radio play with it down here in Georgia!! I'M PRETTY FREAKIN EXCITED RIGHT NOW!!!!! My album comes out May 23rd, so I'm just trying to get the ball rolling. This has been chosen as the kick off single so please help me kick it as far as I can.
Here is the link:
http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_12858268
If you like it, please give me a like on the page and share it. Thanks a lot for all the plays so far from the other songs I've posted. I feel pretty strongly about this song. It seems to connect with people in a way that none of my other songs have. I had to do some hard living to write this one. I have since recovered, and hope that this song can reach others who have been down the same path. I just hope this momentum continues.
Thanks
Wally
TelecasterBlooz April 23rd, 2012, 02:48 AM Too much "auto tune" otherwise a great tune!
getbent April 23rd, 2012, 03:02 AM I like the song, the sentiment, the hook (kind of Boston meets Charlie Daniels) is nicely done.. the production values are all there (somebody loves the splash cymbal!)
What I would be interested in hearing is a less processed vocal...
I get the tpain effect and why it is powerful, but usually it is only on one part of the song (the chorus or refrain) I've never heard a whole song with the effect in place...
is it possible to share an unaffected version? I'd love to hear that...
Good luck with the record.. you clearly have talent!
TeleToTheRain April 23rd, 2012, 03:16 AM You have a great voice, would love to hear less Cher and more you! Love the song though, well done!
Wally Pedals April 23rd, 2012, 09:22 AM Thanks for listening guys! I completely get the auto tune vocal thing and the love hate with it. I feel the same way. Been going back and forth with it. Due to the overwhelming respones I got when i put out the first versions of it, I went "with" it and kept it on there. My thinking was if people are digging it, don't change it. That being said, I have never used Auto tune before, and am guilty of knocking those who rely heavily on it in their performances. So i guess this is my payback!! I am however doing an stripped down acoustic and Piano version of the song. Its almost ready!
Thanks Again!!!
Lost_N_Austin April 23rd, 2012, 09:52 AM I like the song (but bear in mind that I also liked the Taylor Swift paring with T-Pain on Thug Story:roll:).
I'm half way through the other songs but how did you get Brad Paisley to guest on your record to do that Chicken Salad - Chicken Pickin' instrumental? That is some good guitar pickin', reminded me of Redd Volkaert.
I don't Facebook but I like what I hear and I might buy a record like this.
Good luck to you on the release.

Commodore 64 April 23rd, 2012, 09:55 AM OMG I hate the autotune. Why, why, why? It would be a good song otherwise!
WaylonFan76 April 23rd, 2012, 09:57 AM The song is not bad, but that autotune, MY GOD ! Turns me off right away. I'm probably not your target audience, though.
Good on you, man... Glad regular folks get airplay in this day and age. Congrats !
Fender-Bender April 23rd, 2012, 10:09 AM I like the song, the sentiment, the hook (kind of Boston meets Charlie Daniels) is nicely done.. the production values are all there (somebody loves the splash cymbal!)

+1 I completely agree with this.
Keep it up bud, you have some good material and possibly a bright future. I'm ready to hear more and wish you the best!
waparker4 April 23rd, 2012, 10:14 AM WOW great tune, but just go back, delete the FX track with the autotune plugin, hit render and have a ginger ale
guitarzan13 April 23rd, 2012, 10:17 AM I like the song Chicken Salad....Cool pickin'!
Wally Pedals April 23rd, 2012, 11:33 AM I new the auto tune would be a polarizing factor in the mix, maybe 2nd guessing it a little now. But thanks you all so much for the kind words otherwise. And yes I am just a regular guy who is addicted to TDPRi and TGP and i hope I can finally start making a living with my telecaster.
Also, I think my next project is gonna be an instrumental album with stuff like "Chicken Salad" on it. I grew up with Satriani, Vai, and eric Johnson instrumental records playing constantly and guitar music is what I love the most.
THanks again
Wally

guitarzan13 April 23rd, 2012, 02:04 PM GREAT Vocals on the Acoustic version!!!!!!! Man, you don't need a gimick!
Wally Pedals April 23rd, 2012, 03:35 PM Thanks Guys, I've been the guitar player and songwriter for a country band for a while, this is me finally stepping up to the mike and putting out my own music, so maybe I was hiding behind the Auto Tune a little, i've always been very self conscience about my singing.
Fezz, Thanks a lot man, I watch all your videos on here, I got the Famous Fezz Parka mod on one of my teles. WHen is the next episode coming out????
Thanks Again Guys
Wally
getbent April 23rd, 2012, 03:45 PM Great song. Lose the Vocoding and shorten the intro, and you have a hit song.
yup...
you still have pitch correction on on the acoustic version (on pretty high too... take your time if you are having pitch problems and sort them out, the performance will benefit from it!).. your voice is fine... lets hear it!
the song is really really good...
waparker4 April 23rd, 2012, 03:58 PM Sounds way better! There is no need for pitch correction on the backing vocals either!
fezz parka April 23rd, 2012, 04:02 PM yup...

Yes, I heard it too. This is seriously good. Ask yourself, "What would Dann Huff do?".
Wally Pedals April 23rd, 2012, 04:25 PM Point well made... The original version is already submitted to radio and iTunes, so i am kinda stuck as far as any redoing it goes at this point.
But getbent you are right, i spent forever working out vocals and probably over did some of the pitch correcting due to my own insecurities. Thats where an outside producer would have been good.
Fezz,... now i gotta google Dan Huff to find out what he would do!
WaylonFan76 April 23rd, 2012, 07:19 PM Too much technology kills the feeling. Keep it simple.
Wally Pedals April 24th, 2012, 08:58 AM Agreed. This is the first project I have produced and tracked completely by myself, locked in the studio for a month. A few outside opinions along the way may have given a needed different perspective. Im just learning as I go. Thanks for all the plays, I had my most one day plays EVER YESTERDAY!!!!! KEPP UM COMING.
getbent April 24th, 2012, 12:04 PM Yes, I heard it too. This is seriously good. Ask yourself, "What would Dann Huff do?".
Dann might do the same dang thing!
I wanna know what Garth Fundis would do!
fezz parka April 24th, 2012, 12:47 PM I worked with Dann on the Diane Warren song (sung by Leann) for Legally Blonde II. Damn fine producer, and the best (IMO) of the "new" producers. He'd be perfect for this tune, which fits squarely in his wheelhouse.
Me: Dann, can we get Leann to enunciate the chorus just a little more?
Dann: You tell her.
Me: Huh?
Dann: It sounds fine.
Me: Uhh, "We cawn doo dee impobibull?"
Dann: You tell her.
Me: Uhhh, OK.
Man was she pissed.
But Fundis is a great call.
MASONish April 24th, 2012, 01:39 PM Chicken Salad get 2 thumbs up from me Wally!!
ADinNYC April 24th, 2012, 05:22 PM Some wicked chops ya got there my friend!

that is a cool anecdote!
I was at a funeral sunday (utterly tragic and awful and soul crushing, I will never actually be the same, but that is another story entirely)
and my son sat with me and it was in a country church which was packed... they were playing music (country music and several Hank Jr. songs which ruled because of the subject matter in a sort of quasi reverent quasi blasphemous kind of way)
Anyway, a song came on and I recognized that the singer was the father of the deceased and my son nudged me and said, "hey dad, that sounds like you playing the guitar"
And it was. We were at a solemn event with no real chance to talk much.. I have no idea how my son recognized 'my voice' but he did...
Life is so full of opportunities and adventures and mishaps....
it is a fine place, this world of ours... and perfect in its follies...
I love the OP's song.. I just want to hear him play it with nothing more than an electric band and his voice... I think it will give me chicken skin!

I agree with everyone else. You don't need the autotune, you have a great voice.
ETA: I love Chicken Salad, too.
Wally Pedals April 24th, 2012, 11:54 PM You guys are great.
When I started recording this album, it was intended to be just a "demo" for my songs. I really just want to be a songwriter ( and guitar player). I was gonna send it to a few people in the industry in Nashville and see about getting some of them pitched. I put the first version of "Devil in a Whiskey Bottle" on my new Reverbnation page, auto tuned heavy, just a little over a month ago. A radio station in Atlanta stumbled across it the very next day and asked me to come do an on air 1 hour show and interview.I couldn't believe it. Within that first week, I had booked 3 stations here in ga for the same type of interview and acoustic show. The stations started slipping that song in their playlists when they could. So my thinking shifted from a songwriter album to pitch to other artist, to it being my album as an artist. I didn't think anyone would want to hear me sing, so I was shocked at the radio stations interest. And I guess since they first heard it with the auto tune on and liked it, I rolled with it. ... And with as self conscience as i am about singing, it was fine by me.
But guess what.....I GOT TO SING AND PLAY JUST ME AND AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR LIVE ON AIR at 3 stations next month!! It's kinda scary and i am very nervous. I've done it before, but it was with the singer I used to work with. I just strummed and sang harmony. I have to practice my ass off vocaly. Im good under pressure, so maybe I will pull it off. I really wish I could just go in there and rip through "Chicken Salad" on my Tele, skip the singing and call it a day! 2 months go I wasnt even considering singing these songs in public myself. Now I am out there with it, so I am gonna see where it takes me. Maybe nowhere, but man these past few weeks have been exciting!
I greatly appreciated all of your kind words and constructive advice.
When I start recording my next round of songs next month, I think I might start a thread on here, and get you guys to offer a little input during the process. The collective experience and wisdom on the site is priceless. Since I started lurking here last year I have built my own partscaster, a Mission 5e3 amp, modded the hell out of my guitars, built and modded some pedals, and spent waayyy too much money on gear!
Now let's make an album!
Thanks again,
Wally

onenotetom April 25th, 2012, 12:11 AM I like your music and your attitude Wally! Started to listen to the original version and switched right away to the acoustic version then read all of the posts. Listen to your friends here and make that album!
motorfin April 25th, 2012, 01:42 AM This is really good stuff. Ok, you get the point with the auto tune. Well written, well arranged. I like the material.
garytelecastor April 25th, 2012, 02:15 AM Well Wally, I like both of them. The electric guitar work on the 1st version is nice, you have an interesting arrangement, the melody and the harmonies are tight.
All in all it is a cool song, and any air play a person gets today is a great thing.
I think I understand why you used the autotune, but I got to tell you. Your voice is strong enough and on pitch that to me is seems superfluous and a gimmick. When I listened to the second version, the first thing that ran through my mind was pull the vocals off of this and put them on the radio version. You have a hillbilly voice, and it seems kind of a shame to drown it in something that is so unnecessary.
I also believe that your voice in the first version is a little buried in the mix. One thing I learned about producing is that you want to sell the song. I don't know if it's too late, or you think I am totally wrong, but I would go back in and do some minor corrections on the radio version. You are so much better than that song lets you be seen.
Great song, great vocals, great instrumentation. A little (not a lot) over processed.
One other thing. You are getting notoriety. You have to be on the money. In the long run of things, if you are happy with it, and I would be, then why worry about what anyone else thinks.
To quote Loretta Lynn on her first vocal job a guy walked up to her after her first set. She had been singing almost all Patsy Cline tunes, he was loaded but she said he gave her the best advice ever, "Honey, you ain't never gonna be no Patsy Cline, cause there already is one."
The Beatles would still be in the Cavern if they had let their record company use them the way they wanted.
w3stie April 25th, 2012, 02:30 AM The acoustic version sounds really good, doesn't need the autotune. Great job!
Wally Pedals April 30th, 2012, 03:55 AM Thanks for the Facebook likes and listens! Everyone on here seems to like my guitar intrumental CHICKEN SALAD the best though. Go figure..... It does feature my best attempt at some Hot Tele Playing. For those who haven't checked it out yet, here is the link:

If you like it, please give me a like and share it on your Facebook. My album will be out May 23rd and I am doing whatever I can to build my audience. This has been a totally independent effort to put out this album, so,I greatly appreciate any help you guys can give.
Thanks,

e-merlin May 3rd, 2012, 12:44 AM You've got a gold mine in there, Wally, but you've got to fire up the smelter before you get the gold.
Looking at it as a horn section guy, "tight is right;" as a guitar player, "stay loose." Tough decision on balance. Chicken Salad can be great but it takes way too long to get the count right and get all the parts in sync! You've got the voice and the chops.
You have the fun quotient down, now go out and hit a home run in the technical department.
Wally Pedals May 7th, 2012, 12:23 AM Thanks e-Merlin, I understand what you mean. I spent a lot of time aligning the tracks in protools trying to overcome the slight latency of my interface. On high tempo songs, the latency seems more obvious. I think I just need to add more RAM to my iMAC.
Thanks for the continued plays, keep sending them my way!

ludashoeless May 7th, 2012, 12:57 AM wow. great. but i agree lose the autotune
Wally Pedals May 7th, 2012, 06:05 AM Thanks!
jefrs May 7th, 2012, 07:07 AM Wally, you always were going to get slammed for using autotune on here because it's the spawn of satan or something, but that's the one that's getting air play, it's different, it says listen to me.
I reckon occasionally using the vocoder to do novelty effect is ok when it's pretty obvious the singer can sing.
Me, I'm going to say I found it difficult to hear all the words in the vocals. Did you auto-normalise the tracks?

Maybe a better (or just newer) interface ?
I have a top-end Emu audio interface in the big fat desktop but with about 15ms latency rendering it totally useless for recording input.
And then I use a primitive Line6 Toneport UX1 interface into an old Dell laptop with 512Mb for actual recording because it has zero latency. This is bottom of the range but I can only play one instrument at a time. I dislike the FX toys provided with it and always disable them, which is tiresome each time it loads. The point though is the latency is so low you could use it live.
True, I have just bumped up the RAM in the Dell to 2Gb, which means it can now refresh the screen in less than time than a tectonic plate takes but lack of memory was never a latency issue.
ludashoeless May 7th, 2012, 05:58 PM this morning i had the song stuck in my head.... but i still don't like the autotune... i would buy it on itunes if it weren't for the autotune

TelecasterBlooz May 19th, 2012, 03:47 PM Y'Know I've listened to the acoustic version a few times now and it REALLY grows on me. My wife LOVES this song, and I think you should offer this on itunes as a single. Shop it around, who knows? Maybe Brad or Toby will pick you up as an opener. Hell I'd spend 50 bucks to see ya...
Wally Pedals May 19th, 2012, 09:29 PM Thanks a lot Telecaster Blooz! The acoustic version of that song will be available in ITunes very soon. My album will be out this Thursday (May 23dr) on amazon.com and iTunes, but since I submitted the acoustic version after the others, it won't be available for a few more weeks. So stay posted. Wally Pedals May 27th, 2012, 11:54 PM Hey guys,
Just wanted to say thanks for listening to my music, and for those of you who bought a copy of my debut album, extra special thanks!! Your support means a lot.
Also, this past Thursday, in Atlanta, was my first on air radio performance and interview supporting this release. If you have read this thread, this is what I have been stressing out about.... Being the singer this time around had all eyes, ears, and PRESSURE on me. And since I recorded the album on my own, I haven't put a band together yet, so it was just me and an acoustic guitar for an hour.
The show actually ended up going really well, the radio station was very enthusiastic about my songs, and I got a lot of good feedback from listeners.
I have got my next one this Friday, but it's just a phone in interview to a station in Illinois, so that will be easy compared to the other.
If any of you guys have any contacts in radio, or internet broadcasts, anywhere in the US, and are willing to pass any info my way, it would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to book as many stations as possible for interviews/ performances.
Thanks
Wally
Wally Pedals May 28th, 2012, 10:48 PM Thanks for the PM's!
