scottrollick April 20th, 2012, 07:13 PM A pretty common practice. Depends a lot on the pickup for how it sounds. There is a guy in my town that gigs a lot with one. He's got one humbucker in it and it sounds great. Not sure how I would describe it, but definitely on the dirty side... Like a humbucker... In an oil can.

HJayK1 April 21st, 2012, 03:26 AM I saw some of these, i.e., oil can guitars, at an outdoor market in Capetown during a trip there. They were for sale but the person in charge of the booth was playing one and when I asked if I could play one myself he said "no." Not allowing potential customers to play the guitars that were for sale did not strike me as a very good business plan. I very well might have bought one if I had a chance to try one out.
strat_tone April 21st, 2012, 03:49 AM Looks like a rip off of the delta blues fellow Mac Arnold. Its the second video, just scroll down a little bit: http://www.3-string-guitar.com/

puremania April 21st, 2012, 10:41 PM It's a canjo, pretty sure it sounds like a canjo, too. Search youtube for that term to get an idea of they sound. Honestly, they're pretty common, lately, along with cigar box guitars. There's a pretty big underground movement to play fairly primal instruments you made with your own hands. I've got a couple of projects brewing myself.
If you're interested in that sort of thing, PM me, I can send you links to other communities/forums where handmade/trash instruments are the focus.
Oh, and as for the term canjo, it's just something using a can for a body, I've seen them built and strung like a proper 5 string banjo, 3-6 string guitars and even with just one string.
Warm Gums April 22nd, 2012, 07:44 AM There's is also a guy who sells a kit called a "wailer" that is sort of a cigar box thing, but you fold up the box from pre cut card board..
Good if you don't have the tools, desire etc. to actually make the neck, still a bit of a project.
My wife's school bought a dozen a few years back and I had to put them together, actually after doing one, I organized a work party for the other 11
