NPD : Chorus content, and review.

Had a couple NPDs over the past week, inclusive of another stomp under foot muff (tri muff with added mids), a Boss metal zone (for extra brutal), and a Boss CE5 (Chorus ensemble).

Now, let's talk about chorus.

The CE2 is a great pedal, does what it says on the tin. Deep deep chorus everyone loves. Has a slight mid hump and sometimes gets a bit out of hand, but when you've got your sound, you're sorted. I used this one for a long while - I don't think I've used one single pedal for this long without swapping it.

The CH1 is also a great pedal that excels at chorus you're more likely to use for lead work. Doesn't get quite as deep and "big" as the CE2, but the CE2 can't do the light, high end fluttery stuff the CH1 really shines at doing. Our other guitarist uses this on his board at present, great contrast to the CE2 I used to use.

I've wanted to try the CE5 for a long while - The coeccentric (double) high/low cut control got me interested.
Mine is the digital chip version as it so happens, not the pre-2001 analogue version.
I don't know the difference in sound, and I'm not bothered - Yet.

Plugging the CE5 in, all controls at noon, and wow. Hello. That's just what I want.
After a bit of a fiddle, I was getting into Smiths and Cure territory - Just what I was after. (Even though Johnny Marr used a CE2 religiously.)
More tweaking of the controls yielded a sound very close to the CE2 - The CE5 appears to be a jack of all trades, and a master of most. The high/low cut allows you to get a nice high leadey chorus sound without being too shrill, and if it is, you can turn down the effect level knob.
Volume on a chorus seems a bit weird, but it works a treat.

TL;DR -

CE2 - Two controls, rate and depth. The original, as it were. Best suited to rhythm work, will get really shrill with gain and fuzz.

CH1 - Four controls; the effect level proves quite useful. Pre-EQ not as much, but is a noticeable parameter. Stereo outs. Best suited to adding a slight edge to lead work or for a light swirl on your chords. Not as deep as the CE2.

CE5 - 5 knobs total, Boss 4 knob layout. High/low cut is what makes the pedal; has stereo outs too. Effect level is helpful. Is essentially a CE2 and a CH1 in one box.

So if you hate chorus, steer proper clear of the CE5.

If you JUST want the big, deep, classic Boss chorus sound, the CE2 is probably for you.

If you're an '80s chorus kinda guy (or girl of course), the CH1 is probably what you're going to like best.

If you want a chorus box to do either, go for the CE5.

I'm a lightweight of a chorus user and because of this, years ago I went for "affordable/dependable multi-tasker" and have used Boss CE-5 maybe 10 years- mostly for Leslie/Vibe sounds rather that Chorus; but good to know I can dial in either...Not the deepest/most organic etc., but intuitive controls, easy to use- no need to look elsewhere for me!

i really like the sound of the ce-5 but i went with the mxr zw-38 which is the same pedal as the analogue chorus with a different paint job, i got a good price on the zw. i went with the zack pedal as i know he used a ce-5 in his ozzy days so the zw-38 is pretty close in sound and they are still analogue.nothing against digital chorus but having had a digi multi fx for years i wanted to go down the analogue route where possible. when the thing arrives i'll let you know how it sounds.

The Zak Wilde/MXR Analog Chorus sounds like I'd love it as it has identical controls as my CE-5 and probably similar relative sounds in their settings, the diference being analog. But as I mentioned, no reason to change up- I'd like to play one though (but I'd probably love it and then wanna buy...)
