Stem-cell treatment could regrow hair of mice and men
If a bald mouse can regrow hair, why not the millions of Americans who long for flowing locks? Researchers at the Tokyo University of Science were able to regenerate hair on a rodent balder than a bowling ball, which could portend a happy future for other creatures hoping for a hair-filled life. In what was hailed as a breakthrough study, scientists removed stem cells from hair follicles in normal mice and implanted them in the skin of the bald creature. After only a few weeks, bingo - the once bald mouse could have used a pocket comb. It will take a lot longer for potential human patients, however; lead scientist Takashi Tsuji said it will be about a decade before the treatment can be applied to people.
