markw51 April 19th, 2012, 04:50 PM One of my favorite recordings is his live Cripple Creek vocal from The Last Waltz. The combination of his vocals and drumming styles would be difficult to recreate.
hannigan April 19th, 2012, 04:54 PM Poor guy ... throat cancer is particularly cruel it used to be rare and has become more prevalent .
I lost by best friend and bandmate to it last year . So I find this news more disturbing than another kind of death.
My heart goes out to his friends and family .
At least he will live on through his music we still all have that.

DrumBob April 19th, 2012, 06:07 PM I am very sad. I only met Levon once, but he was one of the nicest, most genuine people I ever met. He invited me up to his home in Woodstock, about 90 minutes from here, just to hang out on a weekend, and even gave me his personal phone number! I wish I had taken him up on that offer, and I wish I could have attended one of his Midnight Rambles.
Levon was one of a kind; a great drummer and singer, a rare combination if there ever was one. There was nothing pretentious about him.
Now, only Robbie and Garth remain from The Band.
This has not been a good day.

DuncanAngus April 19th, 2012, 06:45 PM I find myself feeling not so much a person passed but something of America died today.
Totally agree, Levon was an American Institution.
I've heard him called, "The only drummer that can make you cry" and kinda hard to dissagree with that.
A few times since hearing this sad news I've just wanted to cry. Maybe later when I'm alone.
Rest in Peace Levon. Thank You.
Dave
Suttykins April 19th, 2012, 07:13 PM He was the real deal. What a voice, what a drummer, what an inspiration.

This clip always makes me chuckle.
I'll wager he had a good sense of humor and I'll bet he took it with him.
Good luck on the other side Levon.

Kyluckyman April 20th, 2012, 08:36 AM We were looking forward to his upcoming Ramble at the Ryman scheduled for later this month. They are outstanding programs filled with great music performed by outstanding players. We had gone to the previous two when I read a thread saying he was in the last stages. He had played a show as late as March 19 so the return of the cancer and news Sunday was a surpise I hated hearing.
I couldn't sleep as I am still upset....
