My Epiphone " '61 SG Special" arrived a short while ago.
I was a little surprised by the "set up", never had an Epiphone delivered factory fresh that had such a horrible set up. The action was a mile high. After futzing around with it, it was obvious why the action was so high. When adjusting the bridge pup height, someone just about stripped the head right off the elevator screw because the pilot hole was not drilled deep enough. So they backed off and left the bridge pup way high and just raised the action so that the strings would clear it.
After I got that sorted out, I had to pull all the screws out of the P/G and set it tight against the body and re-screw it. The P/G was riding on the screws, not down tight like it should be.
Now that I got that stuff straightened out, I have to remove the strings and clean and oil the fretboard. I don't think I have ever seen a board this dry.
Now on to the good. The damn thing sounds awesome and the neck contour feels great, it's very light at 6.25 lbs. I actually like the tone and feel better than the Gibson 60s tribute SG that I had last year. To me, it sounds better. I do wish I didn't need to monkey around with it a bit, but I guess that's the way it goes, nothing so bad as to make me want to send it back, just some little annoyances. What's the point of putting those "100% set up and inspected in the USA " if it's set up like crap for the want of an elevator screw hole being tapped a little deeper?
