Please reassure me that you don't seriously believe this. :) 63dot April 19th, 2012, 11:56 AM Sad news. Guy was an interesting cat apparently. Still can't believe they lost the lawsuit over the Flute Riff. RIP, Greg Ham. That stupid lawsuit cements many a distaste for what can be done with the law when it comes to suing deep pockets. What if the band never charted with that hit? It's a real stretch to call their hit a ripoff of a children's song. Skully April 19th, 2012, 11:58 AM Next it has to be Borgnine or Vigoda... Borgnine will outlive the cockroaches. Here's a photo snapped of him shopping at Costco in Van Nuys in June 2010: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v715/Skullylonghorn/Borgnine.jpg I was buying supplies for my daughter's school camping trip, when my wife texted me from the front of the store: "Ernest Borgnine at register." So my friend and I, acting silly and very un-L.A., rushed up to the register and he snapped this cell photo as 92-year-old Ernie was wheeling his baloney out of the store. My wife had been in line behind him there before when he was buying diapers for an out of town guest ("Can you believe it?" Ernie asked his fellow shoppers. "Diapers!") And he's still going. I was recounting this story to a friend at a recent Easter gathering and he said, "I saw him at Ralph's a few weeks back." garyd5158 April 19th, 2012, 11:59 AM Greg Ham awesome sax intro to "Who can it be now" eg16BeKyf_I But, don't watch the whole thing, it is just a loop of the intro for 14 minutes. Arbiter April 19th, 2012, 12:12 PM robin gibb is in a bad way as is levon helm Yeah, I'll be stunned if either one of them makes it until Monday. Robin, in theory, could recover, but man, he's been sick for so, so long. Levon won't. I hope the end is kind to them both. boris bubbanov April 19th, 2012, 12:23 PM Yeah, I'll be stunned if either one of them makes it until Monday. I'll still be stunned when either Robin or Levon die. Still, you know they've been suffering a lot; it is hard to see the point if they can't get back some way - I'm just not ready to part with these guys. But I keep imagining Robin being united with Maurice and with his kid brother, Andy. And I keep imagining Levon getting caught up with Richard and Rick. Sad. Greg is gone, just like that. You accept it or you don't. lupowitz April 19th, 2012, 12:33 PM RIP Greg! Somewhere a lawyer is waking up in his $10m house, climbing into his Maserati and saying "What a beautiful day to litigate." That was what some was to say the start of a landslide. trev333 April 19th, 2012, 06:02 PM Nice to see a "flute guy" getting some accolades.... All I know is that I was speaking to one of his friends a couple of weeks back and she said that the court case had "broken him financially and emotionally". She believed he had to sell his house to help cover the legal bills. This is a wrap-up of the farce, dated 24th Feb 2010-- "...Larrikin has asked that it be paid between 40-60% of all income earned by the respondents in relation to "Down Under". This question (and that of costs) is yet to be determined. Pertinent to this determination will be Justice Jacobson's decision that a finding of copyright infringement did not mean that the flute riff was a substantial part of "Down Under" or that it was the "hook" or that part of the song that lingers in a listener's memory..." They won this case, BTW. Interestingly, founder Warren Fahey (http://folkstream.com/reviews/larrikin.html) sold Larrikin Music to Music Sales Corporation in 1988 and, in 1995 Larrikin Records was sold to Festival Music, who are in turned owned by Warners. In times previous, a situation like this would not have come to "lawyers at 10 paces". That's not how we used to deal with things in this country. And all over 2 bars of a 4 bar ditty written for a Girl Guides contest in 1912. So excuse me for feeling like punching an ambulance chaser in the mouth. They won this case, BTW. Yeah, but they got 5%. In times previous, a situation like this would not have come to "lawyers at 10 paces". That's not how we used to deal with things in this country. This is a good thing? Tell me again who settled your country. And all over 2 bars of a 4 bar ditty written for a Girl Guides contest in 1912. So excuse me for feeling like punching an ambulance chaser in the mouth. I think the decision was a bad one. But is it fair to blame all of the legal profession and the United States for the death of Greg Ham? It's unclear how he died, but when I saw him perform back in 1998, I thought he looked rough. He was smoking on stage and it looked like he drank a lot. This was long before the lawsuit. Reading the reports of his death, there were numerous accounts of heavy drinking, sleeping on the bar, and being escorted home. One friend said he had been drinking a lot and using heroin in recent years. A lot of people get bad breaks much worse than Ham's without ever having had the glory that he enjoyed. Perhaps he could've dealt with the disappointments and the injustices better than he did. Dave_O April 19th, 2012, 08:11 PM ... Jackson Jackson April 19th, 2012, 08:28 PM I posted this in another thread, but thought I'd add it here as well. Today I recorded an acoustic version of the song in tribute to a wonderful musician. I'll hold his arms for you. I love Men At Work and am sorry to hear about this whole situation. tfsails April 19th, 2012, 10:08 PM Levon Helm makes three, so that's quite enough for now. Actually, three too many. RIP, all three of you. And no, I don't really believe that bad things come in threes. Just seems that way sometimes. tele-bastard April 19th, 2012, 11:02 PM Couple of great songs they had that still make me smile when I hear them. Thanx for the music Sir. Toto'sDad April 19th, 2012, 11:21 PM Is there any way to instigate a class action suit against the village people for the irreparable harm they've caused? Jupiter April 19th, 2012, 11:45 PM Bad things come in sets of 8 million. We're almost through it. Only 1 million more bad things are going to happen. Drubbing April 20th, 2012, 12:37 AM So over litigation in your country is America's fault? Nice. Yep. You started it and the 1000 different variants of Judge Judy and A Current Affair syndicated the same culture everywhere else. Nick JD April 20th, 2012, 01:08 AM I tried to chase an ambulance once, but it stopped suddenly and I smacked into the back of it. I was hurt pretty bad, but luckily it didn't take long for the ambulance to get there. yark14 April 20th, 2012, 01:09 AM Geez...too much. I absolutely love Men at Work. Business as Usual was one part of the first group of records my step-dad gave to me. I wore it out during my senior year of college. GlenParrish April 20th, 2012, 03:47 AM Sad. I saw Men At Work on their "reunion" tour in the late '90s with Colin Hay and Ham as the only original members. Man, this really bums me out. My band opened 26 dates of their 1998 tour and, of the "famous" musicians I've been around, I can honestly say that Greg was the most personable, enjoyable, and fun to hang with of them all. Sure he liked to party, that's about the only fun part of touring sometimes. What I'll always remember is that he took the time to hang out, talk, and joke with all of us. Men at Work has some awesome songs in their catalog, even beyond their hits, and Greg played no small part In making them memorable and special. He was a wonderful musician and a truly righteous guy. Even though I haven't seen him in 14 years, his passing hits me as a great loss. I'll always hold a special memory of this man. RIP mate. Nick JD April 20th, 2012, 09:28 AM Ghosts appear and fade away... RZ45xrtNnzk tomcor33 April 25th, 2012, 04:47 AM Great tribute Overkill version. Jackson!! I liked Men at Work great band. |
