Pickup wiring questions - 1997 '52 reissue Tele

I have a 1997 copper '52 reissue Tele and the neck pup has 3 wires connecting it the pots/switch. I thought there should only be 2.

I should note that it has been rewired (prior to my owning it) to a modern, 4-way switch - is that why or is it possibly a non-stock pup?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The third wire is a ground. With 4-way switches, the ground link on the bottom of the neck pup has to be cut, and a separate ground wire soldered to the back of the pup and a pot!

Nice guitar...enjoy!

Let's see some pics of your copper 52ri.
Yes, that's how it should be/has to be with 4 way switch.

Are they stock Fender pickups or another brand. For example Keystones already have a separate blue ground wire coming from each pickup so you don't need to install one. Just solder to the pot to ground them.

If they're stock and that wire on yours has been installed like that then that ground link may already have been cut and the pickup cover ground you're seeing put on to accommodate a 4-way switch. Take a peak and see if that's the case.
