telleutelleme April 18th, 2012, 07:49 AM I'm to the point of either daisy chaining power strips (don't worry I won't) or having more outlets added to my room. Two main issues a) two much stuff requires a 5V PS or wall wort and b) two much stuff that requires power.
I know the mystical unicorn of musicians is the wall wortless pedal board, but are there any realistic units out there and just how much stuff can one 30amp circuit take? I do have a single line from the box coming into the room I use.
woodman April 18th, 2012, 10:45 PM I haven't had any trouble in my 20-amp circuit so far ... I run two daisy-chained strips (the first one a surge protector) for the low-juice items, several of which are wall-warted. The computer and hard drives plug into a UPS, and the powered speakers and Crown amp go into the wall. There's enough left over for a little space heater in the winter and a small 4-amp window AC unit in the summer (both definitely plugged into wall outlets). Peripherals are all solid-state, they really don't draw much; if you plugged in a bunch of tube amps it would push up the amperage pretty good.
A 30-amp circuit can handle most any home studio within sane boundaries. Just don't put your heavy draws (especially computer) into a daisy chain.
getbent April 18th, 2012, 11:09 PM if you use a boss tuner or a strobostomp, you can get a daisy chain power cable and run like 12 effects of a single wall wart. I use short extension cords (like 4" long) and run them out of a single power strip.
the draw for pedals is negligible on a 30 amp circuit, nothing to worry about.. most of those pedals run on 5v right? if you run the numbers you'll find your pedals aren't gonna trip any breakers.
Jupiter April 18th, 2012, 11:23 PM When they built our house I had them put in 8 outlets where my computer/music area would be. They thought I was crazy, but who's laughing now?
Answer: The bank. . . .
telleutelleme April 19th, 2012, 12:37 PM Thanks all. The room I was allowed to confiscate has two exterior walls. It has three outlets in the room, but unfortunately my DAW center in all on one exterior wall and that plug is powering Computer and 5 peripherals, mixer, vocal mic phantom power box, GDEC and soon to add VRM box plus the RCA to SPDIF. I already have two strips daisy chained off that plug. The other walls plugs have minitors, tube amps, stomp boxes yada yada yada stuff.
I've got an electrician coming by tomorrow to get a quote for 3 additional plugs on a dedicated circuit.
Tim's tele April 19th, 2012, 12:48 PM If you think about it, the entire room is all on one circuit, you are not going to trip that circuit. Unless your trying make toast, and heat up a hot pocket in the microwave while playing through your rig...
If you have simply run out of ports because of your board, their are many good power supplies out there, I currently have a one spot that works great. And I am going to get a voodoo lab power pedal 2 + soon, you will have no problem running all that through a single outlet.
I have my pedal board and amp (AC30HW2) plugged into a power strip, that goes into one spot of an outlet. And in a separate outlet I have another strip that has a printer, my laptop, xbox 360 with screen, and some speakers plugged into it. I haven't tripped a circuit yet. Even with the ceiling fan running. Granted not everything is turned on all the time. All you need to do is consolidate.
If i have misunderstood the question, which is totally possible, I apologize.
Tim
JCSouthpawtele April 19th, 2012, 12:59 PM Those studio desks with rack spaces. Usually I end up putting in a furman unit and hiding the other odd wall warts behind the desk in a computer power strip that is spaced for wall warts. Plugging the power strip into the last outlet of the furman. So one click shuts everything down. I prewire my live rig the same way.

^^^ Whut he said.
The reason they call amperage "current" is because it's a flow of electrical energy. So all your AC devices are ultimately going to the sea, which is at your breaker box. The little creeks like pedals, peripherals and so forth are at the end of a daisy chain, and if it has a wall wart, it probably qualifies. The main river channels, like the computer, HDs, tube amps as well as any heating or A/C units need their own plug. ... With 30 amps, you could probably run everything you've got plus a tiny camp refrigerator.
And if I understand correctly, having everything on one circuit can be beneficial in that they all share a common ground. (Full disclosure: I'm no electrician!! But the Woodshed has survived four years on a 20-amp circuit without blowing a breaker)

You mean 3X2, right?
bbmyers April 19th, 2012, 09:28 PM Unless there are about 150 wall warts, you're not tripping the circuit. 1000 MA (milliamps) wall warts are on the very large side, most are 500-800 MA. Volts x Amps = Watts so 1000 MA is = 1 amp and at 5 volts, thats 5 watts.
35 wall warts, even daisy chained on outlet strips is 175 watts, the equivalent of 3 60 watt light bulbs.
The problem is space to plug them in. There are outlet strips designed to allow space for them to plug in. Have you seen those?
Something like these (http://www.amazon.com/Furman-SS-6B-Outlets-Standard-Conditioning/dp/B0002D017M/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1334884416&sr=1-1) would be better.
Although you might want a separate circuit on a different leg off the electrical panel to isolate you from noisy things light your computer or margarita machine.
Another option would be to get a honk'n 5v power supply that'll take up 1 outlet and run everything off that. Margarita machines only come in 110 or 12 volts though
