Stain help!Mikkelrm April 18th, 2012, 07:10 AM Hi! I have a telecaster alder body that I have finished with white stain with lacquer in it. And the plan was to oil it with tung oil. But i heard that doesnt work! Does it work? Stratified April 18th, 2012, 10:52 AM I wouldn't use lacquer under tru-oil. See this thread: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/finely-finished/201944-oil-finish-red-blue.html#post2364867 Post 6 is a photo of a Rist guitar (heritage cherry, not white; also, he had to fill pores in mahogany that you won't have to do). Sealed with tru-oil. Sand back to expose wood. If the white stain your going to use has a binder, you could wipe it on. I'm planning to use Mixol white which has no binder, so I will add it to dilute shellac. Having sealed the wood, it should keep you from getting blotches in the color. Finally, tru-oil. Also, see this thread for white stain followed by Tru-oil: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/53011-tele-project-finally-done.html See the thread for pics of his guitar. He says, "I finished the body with Minwax pickling stain with a thin coat of Truoil on top, no grain filler." And, "I don't recall how many coats of the stain I used. I just kept rubbing it in until it looked right..using photos of real blonde teles as a gage. The Truoil I kept to a minimum, probably four medium coats max." Lastly, some folks using Miniwax stains have used their pre-conditioner, which is another way of sealing just enough to avoid blotchy stain. Mikkelrm April 19th, 2012, 12:00 PM Thanks! But the problem is that the stain I put on had lacquer in it. So i can't put anything over it except lacquer. |
