sgtpeppers April 17th, 2012, 05:58 PM So I bought a raven rg60 from guitar center on clearance for 130 but it makes a high pitched squealing sound When turned up loud. so im gonna return it and buy a new amp.
So I'm looking for something in the 200 or under price range and at least a 30watt. Now I'm looking at a Marshall mg series 30 watt at 200 bucks. My friend has a line 6 spider iv and I'm not super impressed with the sound so id like to stay away, I would like a somethin with a good clean and distortion sound.
Ill be using my stagg t320 for a while on it, I will be playing mainly older stuff, such as Beatles, monkees, stones, the who, and even some punk. I.e sex pistols type stuff. Any info is appreciated. Thanks for looking.
burtonfan April 17th, 2012, 06:14 PM You're asking a lot for $200. Up your budget and buy a Vox AC30. You won't regret it.
"Up my budget" you say? By the time you realize the Vox is for you, you'll have spent over $1000 on several cheap quality, terrible sounding amps. Your disappointment will continue to mount and your patience will continue to wear...until you finally concede. Just do yourself a favor and save for a great amp NOW!
IMHO
sgtpeppers April 17th, 2012, 06:29 PM I know I'm asking for a lot but I hardly make money being only 16 so i don't want to save for ever to be able to get a great amp.

Hey I've been there man. However, I am glad that I saved up to get something nicer than a Marshall MG. It took awhile at that age, but I got there and was soo happy to have a nice amplifier. I actually just bought a Vox AC15 for $450 used. I know you can save $250 more and it is sooooo worth it. Tube wattage and solid state wattage have a big difference in the amount of volume. The 15 watts put out from the Vox will be the same or even louder as a 30 watt solid state Marshall MG. The AC15 creates a beautiful chimey tone that can be dirtied up at low volume levels too and people tend to keep them forever because they are such good amps. Hope that helps!
Justin_D_Myers April 17th, 2012, 06:45 PM Here is a video clip. Hope it inspires you to save.

Warm Gums April 17th, 2012, 07:29 PM With that budget I would look at used amps..
Specifically used Fenders( the Beatles, Stones and Who used Fender of Fender derived amps for as long or longer than they used VOX or Marshall..the Monkeeys records were studio musicians for the most part, so again Fender.
However...
There are many nice US/UKmade 1x12 combos available for $1-$200
Remember any used item on the GC web site can be shipped from any store to your store for less than $20 and exchanged at your local store within 30 days.
Some ideas..all 1x12 combos unless noted
Fender Champ 25(or 25 SE) tube power amp!
Or score a Pro Junior...1x10 but 15 watts of tube goodness....there is one on the GC website now for$199..grab it add some pedals as $ allows and be awesome!
Marshall AVT 20 (1x10) but punches above its weight, tube pre amp
Carvin SX 100 (also available as 2x12)
Peavey..various 1x12 combos..including the Bandit, Studio Pro, and Express
These come in various versions...the Transtube versions are always solid.
Vox...save up and get the AC-15
Have fun...
sgtpeppers April 18th, 2012, 08:02 AM I dont really want to sped more than two hundred, I wemt to guitar center and played the Marshall mg 30cfx and it sounded pretty good, anyone have it? Anything to say about it?
picknpluck April 18th, 2012, 08:09 AM Look for a used Peavey Classic 30 and you'll be set. A Classic 20 would be closer to your budget, though. Why the 30 watt requirement?
fezz parka April 18th, 2012, 08:22 AM Or score a Pro Junior...1x10 but 15 watts of tube goodness....

There are a lot better ways to spend $200
The MG series are aimed primarily at young people on a budget who feel that they "must " have a Marshall...
They are made offshore to a price..in six months you will want something more serious, and you will find that it has little or no value as a trade. So much for your $200 budget...
Buy a better designed amp second hand with that $ and 15 to 20 watts will be more than enough for jams and small gigs, you will get a more efficient speaker, and a better cabinet..all or these things contribute to a good sound, that projects well and is pleasing to play.
If you are leaning The Marshall way the AVT 20 was made in the Milton Keynes factory in the UK
and is equipped with a Celsetion Speaker, Accutronics reverb and is a proper budget Marshall..no way should one cost more than $150 used. Another option would be a Class 5...uk made etc. etc..VERY loud, for 5 watts (all tube) might happen for $200 used.
The idea of a small tube PV is also good, the Classic 20 is hard to find, but with a bit of looking you might score one ( or a classic 30)with in your budget...
If you must have a amp right now..take $50 and buy a used 1x10 peavey...it will sound better than the MG and will do all you want ...put the $150 aside and add to it until you have $300 or so and then go shopping for your good amp.

a use peavey bandit 112 it's an awsome amp.and will do almost anything:wink:
RockerDuck April 18th, 2012, 11:35 AM Crate tube amps are in your range.
Controller April 18th, 2012, 11:44 AM Buy two Vox Pathfinder 15r amps. 30 watts!
SamClemons April 18th, 2012, 11:46 AM Are you just getting feedback from high volume? There may be nothing wrong with your amp at all.
paul74 April 18th, 2012, 04:53 PM Consider a used Peavey Classic 30 or 20. It might cost a little more but you are unlikely to outgrow it. I have a Mesa but am happy to have a Delta Blues as a backup. The drive "channel" is great for the kind of stuff you want to play as none of it is super distorted. Then start buying pedals...

Or look for a used Peavey Classic 30 and be even happier as you'll have spent far less (I've even seen used ones around 250 on CL) And gotten in on one of the best kept or overlooked amp secrets out there: the classic series Peaveys are true "giant killers"...
Ymmv...
Cheers

+1 Iike WG's choices of amps.
You appear to favor the Marshalls, so I'll add this:
I think the Marshall AVT's are great. I lucked out and got the AVT 275 for dirt cheap. Even the smallest and cheapest of the AVTs, the AVT 20 puts out a lot of volume and has that distinctive Marshall sound. These AVT's have the 12AX7 tube preamp and the cleans have that nice tube warmth / sparkle. The Marshall tube purists will dis the amp because they don't recognize anything other than all-tube amps. IMO, they're being snobs. These amps can easily sound as good as some all tube amps that cost 2x as much, especially since they can be had cheap on the used market. For $200, you should be able to get into a used AVT 50 or AVT100 combo.
You want an amp now, go for it. Life's to short to sit around and wait. You can get a great sounding amp for the money you have now.
Good luck!
