I've been struggling with this one for years. I think the vocal harmonies are what are messing my ears up for the changes. Anyone know the changes

Don't know the Fagen version but I love the original Drifter's version, one of Leiber/Stoller's finest moments

Haven't heard it in awhile, but thought it was like...

E 2
I said I love a girl and-a Ruby is her name
This girl doesn't love me but I love her just the same
A
Wo oh oh, Ruby, Ruby, how I want you
E
Like a ghost I'm-a gonna haunt you
B7 A E
Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, won't you be mine?
(Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, baby)

Basically just 'blues'.
They'll use sus4, 9th's and 13th's alot.

Oh god Fagen chords. I think every time I try to figure one out its a crap shoot.

I usually think of them in terms of one triad over another bass note, don't know if it is correct though.

E.G. if E is the bass note, the voicings may be a F#, F#m, B or D triad... suspended 2 or 4, 6/9 chords, 13ths, 11ths, 9ths... I may never figure out some Dan songs... sigh

yeah I got most of it but it's 'When will you be mine" line chord per word, got the bass notes. I'll go into serious transcriber mode and post the changes.....I was just being lazy.

I never heard of Donald Fagen. Looked it up on youtube.
He could give lessons on how to take a great song and turn it into a pile of crap.
Dion or one of the Belmonts must have stolen his girlfriend or something, he definitly had some kind of grudge.

Jesh! I kind of like both versions, I guess it's a style thing. Remember, a lot of people hide their lack of knowledge with the excuse of taste.
