I'm not keen on the usual strat sound, too 'dry' for my tastes, so I went into a guitar shop and checked out what they had with a little more oomph.
First tried a Jimmie Vaughn and I loved the sound but not the neck, it gets fat up by the nut and the more I played it, the wronger it felt. Next up was an American Special, sound not quite as good but the neck was fine. Also tried a Roadworn, which I didn't much like at all (I'm not comfortable with fake wornness anyway). So I went back to the Special, and then had to agonise over whether to go for a red or a sunburst, which I much prefer but was £50 dearer. After taking ages, the shop assistant took pity and offered me a £30 discount.
Overall very pleased but when I got it home I tried giving it a lot more volume (over headphones, don't wanna take the windows out) and it revealed a whole new character, gone from clear but with a bit of bite to a snarling beast! The sort of sound that makes you feel you're playing in a rowdy beer bar and having to dodge flying glassware!
