So I got this very nice and stock 89 Squier II strat MIK, in black with maple neck/fretboard. It plays fantastic! The single coils sound good so I'm going to leave the neck and middle pups stock and me and a buddy when he gets time are goin to rout it out for my SD jb. I'll post pics tomorrow.

I had one of those. Interesting story behind them. People called them "E9's". About production being moved from Korea to Mexico and a fire breaking out in a factory (or something like that). Some were supposedly made that year in the U.S. with leftover Made in Korea stickers put on them.

Maybe someone else will chime in here and add to or correct the story that knows more than me.

The bodies were plywood but I love those necks!

Laminated Hardwood body, its the most sustaing guitar that I have ever put my hands on sounds great! And yes the neck is fantastic.

A bit of confusion from your part on this story.

This story applies to USA made Squier (regular Squier not Squier II) Those with an actual "Made in USA" under the name Stratocaster.

You can see some exemples of those headstocks on post #10 on :
http://www.strat-talk.com/forum/squier-strat-forum/21929-u-s-squier-rare.html

My buddy has one Squier USA E9----- ( 1989) that he bought new in Florida in 1990.
Very well made. PUs were not the best and have been replaced by USA models.

He also bought a Korean Squier II the next year for the kids.
Really not the same quality but a marvelous maple neck/fretboard.
Plywood thinner body, not so good tuners, and crappy PUs and pots.

We put in MIM electronic components from my 1995 MIM Strat when I upgraded it with USA components. That really improved the Squier II's sound and made him keep it as a back-up since the neck was so good and the kids were not playing it anymore.

IMO the Korean Squier IIs are worth it for the necks alone. If I were you, I'd replace those tuners with some good vintage style tuners and call it a day. Upgrades to electronics are optional depending on if you like the sound or not.

Thanks, only thing I've done to it is change the block to a steal one and the saddles. Tuners work great hold tune fine for a 23 year old guitar. The pups Idk what time will tell I kind of want to put some nice ass fender pups in someday but I never seem to have any money.

I used a Squire II neck to build this. The neck is that freaking great. I'll buy every one I can find.

Thanks! It's a Rondo SX alder body. My first partscaster/frankenstrat build. It's pieces of four guitars and some electronic upgrades.

That fat, maple, Squier II neck with vintage frets works well for me.

Jeez, I just sold a neck for about $20. Wish I knew at that time you were looking for one.

I have an 89 Korean Squier with the fastest rosewood neck I've even owned.
It was in like new condition whyen I bought it last year. The necks are incredible.

Mine wasn't a Squier II though, it's the earlier Squier E910XXX

Just picked up a beautiful 1989 Samick made Korean Squier II. Fabulous guitar. I took this in on trade for some other gear. Thought I would add to the discussion. These seem to be much underrated as far as price guitars.
