Papa Joe April 11th, 2012, 12:19 AM I found a set in my junk drawer that I have had for well over 40 years and I'm wondering what they might be worth..They're stamped Fender, pat pend..Real cruddy lookin' but still functional..With the screw and springs..
I thought just maybe, some one who is building or restoring a relic or road worn might have a need for them..Anybody here have an idea what they might be worth?
alnicopu April 11th, 2012, 07:36 PM Good find! Check and see what their going for on Ebay. You can also check completed listings by clicking on "advance" (just to the right of "Search"), scroll down and check the box that says "Completed listings". It shows the ones that sold and the ones that timed out and didn't sell. Just checked and a set from 1972, without the springs and a little more minty, went for 100.00.
Hears the link to my search.

Papa Joe April 11th, 2012, 08:54 PM Thanks for the reply..I did go to e-bay and found those ones that sold for $100..He was asking $200 to start..There was another set,the same as mine ,(but much cleaner) that the asking price was over $2000..I didn't see what happened to them..
I'm wondering if I should have them cleaned or sell them as is..
alnicopu April 12th, 2012, 11:32 AM I wonder if you could dip em in some of that tarnish remover I've seen advertised. The one where the guy dips a tarnished spoon in, pulls it out and it looks new. Tough call.
Papa Joe April 12th, 2012, 11:37 AM I've got them soaking in white vinegar over night..I'll rinse and check them ..
Papa Joe April 12th, 2012, 03:38 PM Well, They cleaned up pretty good..I'll leave them at that and put them up for sale..
Thank you for your help..
DeepSouth April 12th, 2012, 03:41 PM I believe a solution of citric acid removes rust. Woodworkers use it to take the rust off old planes. It's supposed to work a treat.
alnicopu April 12th, 2012, 04:02 PM Well, They cleaned up pretty good..I'll leave them at that and put them up for sale..
Thank you for your help..
Good job. They don't look to have much string wear on them. If my wife had found them, she would have probably tossed them not knowing any better. Treasure from a junk drawer.
flyingbanana April 12th, 2012, 04:44 PM They would have sold for more without the cleanup.
Papa Joe April 12th, 2012, 06:30 PM They would have sold for more without the cleanup.
Yeah, I was wondering about that..Wish you would have spoken before I cleaned them..Oh well what's done is done..
So, should I have a high reserve? I have no idea what they might bring..
Some input here will be greatly appreciated..
alnicopu April 12th, 2012, 09:09 PM Heres how I do Ebay. I look at the completed listings. Try and get an average of about what they are selling for. I will then set a "BUY IT NOW for around the highest selling price and start the bidding at about the average of the ones that sold. Problem here is I'm usually flipping something like a pedal or a guitar I got a really good deal on from Craigslist and not something that is truly vintage. But you still gotta be realistic about it.
The thing about the vintage stuff is that there is usually someone who REALLY wants and is looking for THAT item. I got lucky once, bought an old Fender Bronco guitar for 150.00. Had the case, key, and the original sales receipt, didn't know about the completed listings feature then. I didn't know what it was actually worth at the time (I was kind of new at the ebay thing then) so I started the auction at about 350.00 and did not have a buy it now. I got lucky because 2 guys that, I guess, were collectors got into a bidding war and it sold for 770.00.
BTW I think you did a good thing by cleaning them, they looked to me a little to cruddy before but now look like something I would brag about putting on my strat. When I sold the bronco I taped the fretboard, buffed the green corrosion off the frets, cleaned up the board and oiled it and polished up all the chrome and it looked way better than it did when I got it.
Papa Joe April 12th, 2012, 09:39 PM OK, Thanks..I'll put them up tomorrow when (hopefully) my head is a little clearer..Think I'll just set a high reserve and see what happens..If they don't sell, at least it should give me a good line on their value..
This might be fun..
alnicopu April 12th, 2012, 09:47 PM Good luck with it. Thats found money man, don't pay no bill with it. I see some tasty new old school gear in your future!!!
Papa Joe April 13th, 2012, 10:47 AM I'm a strict follower of the old rule.."never count your chickens before they're hatched"...My SS check takes care of my regular bills so anything I pick up extra goes for toys.I have benn GASSIN' for a J Mascus Jazzmaster though..
Papa Joe April 13th, 2012, 01:53 PM They are listed..We'll see what happens...
Found another item that might be worth looking in to after this is done..
alnicopu April 13th, 2012, 04:57 PM Post the link to them so we can see how you do. Or maybe even try and get 'em.

Try that one, found it and it works I click on it.
Good honest sounding, no BS description. I think you nailed it with the opening bid price. Those things have less string wear on 'em than my '07 highway 1!! Good luck.
Papa Joe April 18th, 2012, 12:32 PM Well, I'll know in less than an hour what they are worth..I really don't expect to get the reserve price but it will give me a good idea of their value and I can re-list at a more reasonable price..We'll see..
